Navigating the 8th Edition NRP Learning Platform: A Comprehensive Overview

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), developed and maintained by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in collaboration with the American Heart Association (AHA), is a cornerstone of neonatal care. Built on the latest scientific evidence and guidelines, it ensures that healthcare providers are trained with the most up-to-date neonatal resuscitation practices. For over 35 years, NRP has been widely implemented in hospitals and healthcare systems worldwide, training millions of healthcare providers. Currently, more than 500,000 active NRP providers and instructors are engaged globally. As of May 2019, over 4.2 million healthcare professionals have been trained or retrained in the United States. The NRP currently has approximately 26,000 active instructors. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the 8th Edition NRP Learning Platform (LP), its features, and its significance in preparing healthcare professionals for neonatal resuscitation.

The Importance of Neonatal Resuscitation Training

A neonate in cardiorespiratory distress requires specialized-resuscitation training due to unique physiology in a newborn's transition to breathing. Neonatal patient outcomes rely on the immediate and effective resuscitation response of medical providers. Healthcare facilities must ensure that their staff is both confident and competent in high-quality neonatal resuscitation skills to improve outcomes and provide the best chance at a healthy and thriving start to life-Every baby. The NRP education and training solutions are designed for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation in the delivery room and newborn nursery. The NRP curriculum is designed for health care professionals who are involved in any aspect of newborn resuscitation.

Understanding the NRP 8th Edition Learning Platform

The traditional Instructor-Led NRP course conveys an evidence-based approach and facilitates effective team-based care for healthcare professionals who care for newborns at the time of delivery. This program uses a blended learning approach, which includes online testing and hands-on case-based simulation/debriefing that focus on critical leadership, communication, and teamwork skills. In collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), RQI Partners has developed a digital delivery program for NRP, ensuring healthcare providers are prepared to deliver life-saving resuscitation when required. Our approach of self-directed skills sessions dramatically increases providers’ competence and confidence to deliver high-quality resuscitation for neonatal patients.

Key Features and Updates in the 8th Edition

The NRP programs and courses continue to meet the learning needs of Instructors and Providers through award-winning state-of-the-art interactive education.

Two Levels of Learning: Essentials and Advanced

The NRP 8th Edition offers two new levels of learning: NRP Essentials, which covers lessons 1-4 of the NRP 8th Edition textbook, and NRP Advanced, which covers lessons 1-11. Anyone who is involved in the care of a newborn should take NRP Essentials. NRP Advanced is appropriate for those who attend births and are responsible for resuscitation of a newborn, and for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation beyond positive pressure ventilation. If a healthcare professional is unsure about which NRP level to take, they should probably take NRP Advanced. The NRP 8th edition Essentials Provider content covers lessons 1 through 4 of the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 8th edition.

Roles and Responsibilities of NRP Administrators

This event is to help NRP administrators learn how to verify that your organization is live, discuss administrators’ roles and responsibilities, and discover administrators’ support tools.

The RQI for NRP Program

The RQI for NRP program is a self-directed quality improvement initiative based on a low-dose, high-frequency model.

Transition to the 9th Edition

The 9th Edition of the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association will be launching in October 2025. NRP Steering Committee

Developed by a diverse group of experts-including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and midwives-NRP continues to set the gold standard in neonatal resuscitation education. The AAP Neonatal Resuscitation Program Steering Committee (NRP SC) is a multidisciplinary group responsible for coordinating, developing, and implementing educational materials to promote optimal care and evidence-based resuscitation of newborns. The committee is comprised of actively practicing neonatologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, hospitalists, community providers, midwives and obstetricians. Liaisons from key organizations - such as the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) - also serve on the NRP Steering Committee to ensure a broad representation of perspectives. The NRP SC works closely with AAP staff to develop resources and policies based on the latest science and education methodologies. The committee’s goal is to translate the Consensus and Science and Treatment Recommendations (CoSTRs) from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and the Neonatal Resuscitation Guidelines from the AHA/AAP Neonatal Writing Group into an effective educational program.

Target Audience

NRP is designed for those who care for newborns in the delivery room, maternal/child units or the newborn nursery. Are you ready to take an NRP Provider course? The NRP courses are available for two skills levels, Essentials and Advanced, to best prepare healthcare professionals to respond competently and confidently based on their level of responsibility.
