AALAS Learning Library: An Overview of Online Training Resources for Laboratory Animal Science
The AALAS Learning Library (ALL) stands as a significant resource for individuals seeking proficiency in laboratory animal science. Established in 2003, this internet-based training system serves a broad audience, including those pursuing technician certification and institutions requiring IACUC-mandated training. The Learning Library offers a variety of courses which emphasize the appropriate handling, care and use of animals in research. Courses include a wide range of topics encompassing many points of interest. A few course titles include: "Anesthesia, Analgesia and Surgery", "Compliance and IACUC Training" as well as many species-specific training courses. Principal Investigators and their laboratory staff members interested in receiving an account on our roster are encouraged to contact the IACUC learning library group coordinator. Computer-based training is potentially a useful means of gaining proficiency in various aspects of laboratory animal science.
Purpose and Scope
The AALAS Learning Library (ALL) is designed to enhance knowledge and skills related to laboratory animal care. It covers a spectrum of topics, from basic animal husbandry to advanced surgical techniques. To evaluate the effectiveness of the ALL as a tool for general training and for achieving certification, the AALAS Online Learning Committee initiated a review of the online courses. The authors analyzed the numbers of users who accessed different types of courses and completed exams in those courses. They also correlated ALL usage with pass rates in technician certification exams.
