Aberdeen Proving Ground RISE Program: A STEM Internship Experience
The Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) offers a unique window into the world of STEM through its Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (RISE). This program, alongside other initiatives, aims to cultivate the next generation of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians.
Fostering STEM Literacy from an Early Age
Recognizing the importance of early exposure to STEM concepts, various outreach programs target students from elementary school through high school. The C5ISR Center, for instance, conducts in-school programs for 1st through 5th graders in northeastern Maryland. These programs combine storytelling, basic STEM language, and career awareness to spark children’s natural curiosity and inventive play. The goal is to make STEM engaging and accessible, laying the foundation for future interest and success. Development of STEM literacy must begin at the youngest grade levels.
C5ISR Center Initiatives
The C5ISR Center plays a crucial role in fostering STEM education and providing insights into technology-driven careers. Their initiatives include:
- C5ISR Center Math and Science Summer Camp: A one-week introductory STEM program that allows students to participate in hands-on learning experiences in science and engineering. The camp features the development of models to solve real-world problems.
- C5ISR Center Outreach Program Office: This program tours interested 1st through 5th grade classrooms in northeastern Maryland, coupling storytelling, basic STEM language, career awareness, and children’s natural tendencies towards inventive play. This one-day in-school assembly promotes STEM engagement through an activity or guest speaker panel.
- Engaging and Educational Activities: The C5ISR Center also provides fun and educational activities that can be done with minimal materials and a lot of imagination.
The world-class C5ISR Center workforce is committed to nurturing the next generation of STEM professionals.
The RISE Program: An Immersive Internship Experience
The Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (RISE) at Aberdeen Proving Ground is a two-week internship program designed for high school students who are at least 16 years old by July 1st of the program year. It’s a unique opportunity to experience the work environment in the Department of Defense while still in school. This program offers participants the chance to work alongside professional engineers and scientists on result-oriented projects.

Additional Internship and Fellowship Opportunities
Beyond the RISE program, various other internship and fellowship opportunities exist within the Department of Defense and related agencies, catering to a wide range of academic levels and interests. These programs aim to provide students with practical experience, mentorship, and exposure to potential career paths in STEM fields. Some notable examples include:
- Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) Internships and Fellowships: ORISE offers a multitude of research and non-research internship and fellowship programs. These opportunities can successfully impact your career path and/or add value to the research opportunities of students or alumni you engage with at your organization.
- High Performance Computing Internship Program (HIP) and Faculty Immersion Experience (FIX): Sponsored by the Department of Defense’s (DoD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP), these 10-week experiences are offered in collaboration with more than a dozen DoD hosting organizations nationwide.
- DHS Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs: This office sponsors the Professional Opportunities for the Student Workforce to Experience Research (HS-POWER) Program for undergraduate and graduate students. HS-POWER is open to students majoring in a broad spectrum of homeland security related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as DHS mission-relevant research areas.
- Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Summer Research Team (SRT) Program: This program aims to increase and enhance the scientific leadership at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) in research areas that support the mission and goals of DHS.
- Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Internship Program: The TSL is a DHS Science and Technology Directorate Federal Laboratory located at the William J. Hughes Technical Center, Atlantic City International Airport, New Jersey. The core mission is to enhance homeland security by performing research, development, and validation of solutions to detect and mitigate the threat of improvised explosive devices. TSL helps protect our nation’s civilian air transportation systems. By virtue of its accomplished experts, state-of-the-art facilities, and partnerships, TSL offers the homeland security community and transportation security partners the ability to advance detection technology from conception to deployment through applied research, test and evaluation, assessment, certification, and system qualification. DOT also offers internships and fellowships through ORISE.
- DOD College Acquisition Internship Program (DCAIP): This is an opportunity for Army acquisition organizations to hire eligible college students for a 10-week paid summer internship.
- DFAS Intern Program: This is a paid summer internship that provides developmental opportunities and career exploration experiences to college students who are interested in pursuing a civilian federal career upon completion of their academic program.
- Recruitment and Referral Program for College Students with Disabilities: This program provides summer or permanent jobs.
- Stipend-Paid Summer Internship Opportunities: These are offered to undergraduate and graduate level university students pursuing STEM degrees, as well as upper-level high school students; select locations also offer internships to university students pursuing education-related degrees and K-12 professional educators.
CMS-Intern Programs
- CMS-Intern (Management Trainee): This is a two-year entry-level GS-5 training program where candidates will PCS from their current duty station to a training location and train in all departments throughout the store (with the department Manager or whomever has oversight).
- CMS-Produce Internship: This is a one-year entry level GS-5 training program where candidates will PCS from their current duty station to a training location and train with a Produce Manager (or whomever has oversight of the department).
Benefits of Participating in STEM Internships
