Abilene Christian University Baseball: A History of Wildcats on the Diamond

The Abilene Christian University (ACU) Wildcats baseball team boasts a rich history as a varsity intercollegiate athletic team representing ACU in Abilene, Texas. As a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I, the team competes at the highest level of college baseball. Their home field, Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark, provides a dedicated venue for the Wildcats to showcase their talent.

Crutcher Scott Field at Bullock Brothers Ballpark: A Home Field Transformation

Crutcher Scott Field, a 4,000-seat baseball stadium on the campus of Abilene Christian University, has been the home of the Wildcats since its construction between 1990 and 1991. It also hosted the Abilene Prairie Dogs from 1995 to 1999.

In 2025, the stadium underwent a significant transformation with a multi-phase renovation project. Phase 1, completed in April 2025, included a complete rebuild of all but the 3rd base side. The renovated stadium features full chair-back seats, a roof canopy, a new turf field, new player facilities, and spectator suites.

The stadium's exterior now reads "Bullock Brothers Ballpark," while the name "Crutcher Scott Field" remains on the playing surface. The renovated stadium was named the Best Sports and Entertainment Construction Project in Texas and Louisiana for 2025 by Engineering News-Record.

The season began with a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where the team engaged in service, cultural exchange, and spiritual growth. Partnering with a local church in San Pedro, the Wildcats distributed food and supplies to families, fostering connections through conversation and prayer. The trip had a profound impact, with 19 Wildcats committing or re-committing their lives to Christ, leading to 6 baptisms upon their return to Abilene.

The Wildcats demonstrated resilience throughout the season, overcoming challenges and ultimately raising the bar for future teams. They developed a strong bond, which McCarty attributed to their shared experience in the Dominican Republic.

On-Field Performance: Resilience and Achievement

Kicking off the season in February, the Wildcats posted a 15-7 record in their non-conference schedule, including an 11-game winning streak. Despite a slow start to conference play, going 2-7 through the first three series, the team turned their season around with a 13-2 record in their next 15 conference games.

The Wildcats finished the season with an overall record of 34-23 and a 15-9 mark in conference play, securing their fifth consecutive 30-win season. They closed out the WAC schedule with five consecutive series wins, including three sweeps.

Key Players and Standout Performances

The 2025 roster featured a mix of talent from high school, junior college, and four-year transfers. Junior college standouts Sam Hardcastle, Diego Cardenas, and Grant Watkins made immediate impacts, bringing power, defensive versatility, timely hitting, and leadership to the team.

Cardenas and Watkins emerged as key offensive forces, accounting for 35 of the Wildcats' 63 home runs and driving in 122 runs with a combined slugging percentage of .640. Cardenas earned WAC Player of the Week honors after hitting three home runs against Cal Baptist.

Henry Cone, a transfer from Baylor and Elon, made a memorable debut for the Wildcats. After recovering from an injury, Cone pitched an immaculate inning in his first outing against Prairie View A&M, striking out three batters on nine pitches. Cone recorded four saves and 20 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.

Dominick Reid, a four-year transfer from Oklahoma State, established himself as one of the best starting pitchers in ACU history. He led the team in ERA (3.26), WHIP (1.11), innings pitched (88.1), and strikeouts (112). Reid's strikeout total marked an ACU Division I record, making him the first pitcher in the Division I era and since 2009 to reach triple-digit strikeouts in a single season. He also maintained a top 20 spot nationally for strikeouts.

Freshmen Braden Regala, Brady Gray, Brady Coe, and Louis Bussard contributed valuable innings, setting the stage for future success. Regala showcased his speed and on-base ability, leading the team and the conference with 29 stolen bases and posting a .383 OBP. Coe made an impact as a two-way player, recording four wins and four saves on the mound, with 26 strikeouts in 27 innings.
