How to Find and Apply for Global Internships
Finding an internship abroad can be tough, but it's definitely possible.
Determine Your Goals
Consider what you hope to gain from an international internship. Do you want to grow your skills or understand the inner workings of a specific industry? Are you looking to build your portfolio?
Research Potential Internships
Once you have an idea of where you want to intern and where you want to travel to, start searching for internships in the country and industry that interests you.
Apply for Internships
Once you have found internships that interest you, apply for them by submitting your resume and cover letter.
Obtain Necessary Documents
Depending on the country you plan to intern in, you may need a work visa or other legal documents.
Prepare for the Experience
Before you depart for your internship, learn as much as you can about the culture and customs of the country you will be living in.
Financial Considerations
The cost of doing an internship abroad varies widely based on the program, location, and duration. You’ll need to budget for program fees, visas, travel, and of course, your living expenses while abroad.
Funding Opportunities
Several scholarships and grants are available to help students finance their international internships. UVA Global Internships Scholarship supports financially needy undergraduate students participating in UVA's Global Internships programs. The Walker Global Experiences Scholarship is designed to empower UVA undergraduates by providing support to financially needy students participating in a summer education abroad program with a focus on applied learning. Besides, there are many other scholarships and grants available.
Choosing the Right Location
Some of the top countries for interning abroad include Australia, England, Italy, South Africa, and Japan. When deciding where to intern abroad, you should consider what countries specialize in your desired industry, check whether or not that location welcomes international workers, and make sure there isn't a language barrier that may derail your productivity.

Outside of the internship, Buenos Aires is an amazing city to live in, with beautiful architecture and a very diverse population. I lived in a homestay and grew very close with my host mom."

I was welcomed into a culture that encouraged kindness and openness, making it easier to form genuine connections."
Destiny Jones (UVA in London: Global Internships)
"Throughout my time abroad, I grew in ways I never anticipated. Interacting with locals, peers, and international colleagues, I gained a new perspective on the privileges I hold as an American. This realization was both humbling and enlightening, challenging my preconceived notions and biases. Engaging with diverse perspectives has taught me the importance of remaining open-minded and reassessing my assumptions. This experience has solidified my commitment to continuing this growth, both personally and professionally, in future international and intercultural contexts… To prospective students, I say: just go for it."
