Academy for Precision Learning: An Inclusive Education for Neurodivergent Students in Seattle
The Academy for Precision Learning (APL) is a non-profit, independent, K-12 school located in Seattle, Washington, dedicated to providing inclusive and affirming education for neurodivergent students. APL empowers its students through individualized instruction, embedded supports, and a community that celebrates neurodiversity. Driven to work in collaboration with students, APL has created a school environment that feels safe, accepting, and supportive.
Mission and Core Values
APL's mission is to provide an inclusive, affirming education for neurodivergent students. The school's core values center around individualized instruction, embedded supports, and a community that celebrates neurodiversity. APL is dedicated to helping students succeed regardless of their situation and abilities. The school offers targeted opportunities that promote the academic achievement and social development of students who benefit from a smaller, supportive learning environment.
Addressing a Critical Need
APL serves students who often have not yet found success in traditional learning environments. Many students attending APL have an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, meaning there are thousands of school-age children on the spectrum in Puget Sound-area school districts. For younger students, that often means their educational and social development are not adequately nurtured. APL’s individualized programming, high teacher to-student ratio, and clinical ABA programming provides a greater chance of success for children on the spectrum than they may find elsewhere. Regardless of their situation or abilities, APL is prepared to ensure that all students can reach their full potential.
Comprehensive Programs and Services
APL operates both as a school and an embedded licensed behavioral health agency, providing Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for those students with autism. APL utilizes varied learning experiences so kids who are challenged in different ways by autism can succeed academically and socially. The school continuously monitors these skills through sophisticated data collection/teaching methods and then makes needed alterations in “real time.” This system ensures that students’ full potential is maximized.
The middle school program at APL is designed with an evidence-based curriculum, centered around project-based learning and community engagement, with a specific focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). In addition to academic growth, the program prioritizes the development of social skills, encouraging students to collaborate and communicate within a group setting. The middle school program is committed to creating an inclusive environment that affirms neurodiversity, recognizing and celebrating the unique strengths and abilities of all students.
