The University of Ghana: A Historical Overview
The University of Ghana, located in Accra, stands as a prominent symbol of higher education in Ghana and across Africa. Founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, it has evolved into a comprehensive institution with a rich history and a commitment to academic excellence.
Foundation and Early Years
The genesis of the University of Ghana can be traced back to the Asquith Commission on Higher Education in the Colonies, which advocated for the establishment of university colleges in association with the University of London. Consequently, the University College of the Gold Coast was established by Ordinance on August 11, 1948. Its initial focus was on providing education in liberal arts, social sciences, general sciences, and medicine.
The establishment of the University College of the Gold Coast was a culmination of the efforts of various organizations, committees, institutions, and prominent individuals, both in Ghana and abroad. Among the notable Ghanaians who championed the cause were Dr. Nanka-Bruce, Rev. Prof. C. G. Baeta, Sir E. Asafu-Adjaye, and Dr. J. B. Danquah.
Initially, the university operated as an affiliate college of the University of London. The British government established an Inter-Universities Council to oversee academic standards and approve academic appointments. While the university received funds from the British government, it gradually developed more autonomy, modifying courses to better suit local conditions. However, the University of London retained the sole right to confer degrees.
Transition to Full University Status
Following Ghana's independence from Britain in 1957, the College Council requested the government to grant the University College independent university status with the power to award degrees. In 1961, the government approved the request, and the University of Ghana was established. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of the Republic of Ghana, became the first Chancellor of the University.
