Every year, Adena Health System provides care to over 400,000 patients, relying on the support of the communities it serves. The Adena Health Foundation plays a crucial role in enhancing health care through charitable giving, supporting various initiatives from building health centers to purchasing advanced technology. A significant part of this support is directed towards scholarships, helping aspiring healthcare professionals achieve their educational goals.

The Role of the Adena Health Foundation

The Adena Health Foundation serves as a central hub for charitable contributions aimed at improving health and wellness within Adena’s nine-county service area. Its functions include:

  • Serving as a focal point for charitable giving for health and health-related initiatives in Adena’s nine-county service area.
  • Translating gifts and resources from the health system to community benefit programs to improve health and wellness.
  • Safeguarding the funds of donors who designate gifts to special programs or unique needs for health care in the area.
  • Conducting capital campaigns as directed to support construction and expansion of programs.
  • Providing accountability and stewardship for donors.

The foundation ensures that 100% of donations are distributed according to the donor's wishes, making a direct impact on healthcare in the region. Individuals can contribute through planned legacy donations or stock donations, maximizing their impact on the community's health. The Adena Health Foundation also hosts multiple events throughout the year to support its initiatives.

Hope For Our Future Scholarships

The Adena Health Foundation offers "Hope For Our Future" scholarships to students pursuing careers in healthcare. These scholarships are made possible through fundraising efforts and generous contributions from the community, Adena Regional Medical Center Volunteers, physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, and caregivers of Adena Health System.

General Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for Adena Health Foundation scholarships, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Residency: Applicants must reside in one of the counties Adena Health System considers part of its service area (Fayette, Highland, Hocking, Jackson, Pickaway, Pike, Ross, Scioto, and Vinton counties).
  • Education: Applicants must be high school students receiving a high school diploma or have a GED score of at least 550.
  • GPA: A high school Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 is required.
  • Career Path: Applicants must be pursuing an education within the field of health care, which includes both clinical and non-clinical roles within a health system.
  • Employees: Employees of Adena Health System are eligible.

The Hope for our Future scholarships support students pursuing careers that could be part of a health system. While this includes positions you would normally associate with health care such as doctors, nurses, therapists, aides, it can also be accounting, finance, legal, human resources or any job found within a health system.

Specific Scholarship Funds and Their Requirements

Several scholarship funds have specific criteria in addition to the general requirements:

  1. James R. Manchester Radiology Education Endowment: For staff or students pursuing a career in imaging/radiology.
  2. Soon Phil Choice Scholarship Endowment: For students studying radiology, medical imaging-related fields, or nursing.
  3. Beth Ann Elliott Memorial Scholarship Endowment: Specifically for nursing students.
  4. Catherine Evanoff Memorial Scholarship Endowment: For students studying any health care-related field of study.
  5. Gordon F. Streicher Memorial Scholarship Endowment: For students seeking a degree in the medical laboratory profession. Recipients must be second-year students accepted into a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology (MT) program or have been accepted into a program leading to an Associate’s degree in Laboratory Sciences and must live in one of Adena’s nine-county service area.
  6. Reginald C. Blue Nursing Scholarship Endowment: For nursing students only, who must live in one of Adena’s nine-county service area.
  7. Adena Health Foundation Scholarship Endowment: This scholarship has no specific restrictions on the field of study.
  8. Volunteer Scholarship Fund: For students pursuing any health care field of study.
  9. Cindy Drummond Commemorative Scholarship Fund: For students pursuing non-clinical fields of study, with preference given to students pursuing health care-specific courses of study. Students must live in one of Adena’s nine-county service area.
  10. G. Howard Wood, MD, Medical and Nursing Student Loan Trust Fund: For students studying to become medical doctors, osteopathic doctors, registered nurses, or studying any of the allied medical arts (AIM students). Residents of Chillicothe and/or Ross County or students who are graduates of a high school located in Chillicothe or Ross County are eligible.
  11. Jack Berno Hope For Our Future: Available to students in any field of study, but applicants must have a desire to work in health care post-graduation and Must be a dependent of an Adena caregiver who demonstrates academic excellence. For consideration of this scholarship, the dependent must live within Adena’s nine-county service area.

Application Process

To apply for the "Hope for our Future" scholarships, applicants must submit a complete application by the deadline. The application must include the following items in the specified order:

  1. Application Form: The application form must be completed online and can be obtained by visiting www.adena.org/foundation and clicking on the “Hope for our Future” link.
  2. Official School Transcript: The transcript must indicate the student’s Grade Point Average.
  3. Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required. One letter must be from a current or former teacher. Letters from relatives will not be accepted.
  4. Personal Essay: A short essay must be typed into the online application and should address the idea of "Hope for our Future."
  5. Letters of Acceptance: Letters of acceptance from colleges.

The information supplied on each applicant will be made available to all Scholarship Committee members for review. The scholarship committee is comprised of members from the Volunteer Advisory Council, Women’s Board, Community Council and Adena Foundation Board members. Applications will undergo an initial review to make sure they are complete and that eligibility requirements are met and those that pass that test will go to the committee, where consideration will be given to academic performance, community and school involvement, the quality of the overall application and attention to detail.

Scholarship Selection Process

The Adena Health Foundation Scholarship Committee, consisting of members from the Volunteer Advisory Council, Women’s Board, Community Council, and Adena Foundation Board, reviews applications. The committee considers academic performance, community and school involvement, the quality of the overall application, and attention to detail.

Applications undergo an initial review to ensure completeness and that eligibility requirements are met. Those that pass this initial review are then evaluated by the committee.

Notification of Scholarship Awards

For those selected to receive a scholarship, you will be notified at the Senior Scholarship Awards Banquet hosted by their school. Winners will NOT be notified prior to the banquet. If your school does not have a banquet, your guidance counselor will be notified. For those selected to receive a scholarship, the funds will be paid directly to the school at the beginning of the school year and disbursed by the school.

The Adena Health Foundation notifies the schools for the winning applicants only. Due to the volume of applications, they are not able to notify those who were not chosen.
