With over 60 regional programs statewide, Maine Adult Education offers diverse classes, services, and resources tailored to meet the unique needs of local communities. High School Completion Programs

For adults seeking to complete their high school education, Maine Adult Education offers two pathways: the Adult High School Diploma and the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET, formerly the GED). Both programs are completely free and recognized by colleges, employers, and the military.

Adult High School Diploma

The Adult High School Diploma program allows individuals to earn their diploma by taking classes to earn credits. Students can transfer credits earned in high school or from other educational institutions. Instructors then tailor classes to meet individual educational goals. RSU 24 Adult Education offers free high school completion classes tailored to individual schedules and educational goals, allowing enrollment and class commencement at any time.

HiSET (formerly GED)

The HiSET program enables adults to earn a high school diploma by passing a nationally recognized test that assesses high school-level skills and knowledge. The test covers five sections: reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, and science. Preparation options for the HiSET vary depending on individual schedules, needs, and goals. Students typically take a practice test to identify areas where they need to study more and may then take classes or work with a tutor before taking a section of the test.

College Transitions Programs

Maine Adult Education also provides programs to help adults prepare for college. Hancock County College Transitions (CT) is a college prep program consisting of college readiness, math, reading, and writing. This program offers adults the opportunity to build the skills, knowledge, and experience to enroll and succeed in college.

Hancock County College Transitions (CT)

CT includes three academic classes:

Math & Technology: This course provides an intensive review of basic math skills and introductory algebra, teaches technology tips and skills, and develops problem-solving techniques and strategies.
College English: This course builds critical reading skills and writing processes to provide a strong foundation for college-level writing.

Hancock County College Transitions, a free college prep program designed to set students up for success in higher education, runs from September 30 to December 16, on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

"Curious About College" Program

Portland Adult Education recently launched a new program, "Curious About College," that aims to empower adult learners interested in embarking on their higher education journey. Maine Adult Education has offered Maine College and Career Access (MCCA) programming since 2001 (formerly called College Transitions) to provide readiness for pathways to postsecondary education and careers.

Workforce Training and Development

Maine Adult Education is helping to fill gaps in the workforce through collaborative and creative efforts with community partners and employers. From renewable energy and healthcare to commercial driving, adult education programs offer affordable workforce training that leads to certifications and credentials.

Healthcare Training and Certifications

RSU 24 Adult Education offers a variety of healthcare training and certifications for Clinical Medical Assistants, Nursing Assistants, and more. These certifications are ideal for those considering entry-level clinical positions or a nursing degree. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) programs are available, providing opportunities to earn certifications at no cost through the Strengthening Maine’s Workforce grant.

Strengthening Maine’s Workforce Grant

The Maine DOE awarded a total of $4 million in Strengthening Maine’s Workforce Grants between 2022 and 2023. This grant has been imperative to the program’s success. Since the organization’s start in 2022, it has provided more than 4,686 hours of training for Ignite PI employees and 240 hours for non-employees.

Other Workforce Training Programs

Adult education programs offer a variety of workforce training programs in high-demand industries. Last year, Maine’s adult education programs awarded 2,600 certifications in high-demand industries.

English Language Learning

Maine’s adult education programs worked with over 6,000 multilingual learners last year, helping them strengthen their English skills, assisting them with training for jobs and college, and helping them prepare for US citizenship. English Language Learning classes build skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English. There is no cost for these classes.

Supporting Adult Multilingual Learners Institute

This summer, the Maine Department of Education’s (DOE) Adult Education Team hosted its third annual Supporting Adult Multilingual Learners Institute at Sugarloaf Mountain. Adult Education teachers, curriculum designers, and administrators had the opportunity to learn from speakers, engage with different breakout sessions, and have meaningful discussions with their peers.

Maine Adult Education programs have helped countless adults achieve their goals. Last year, nearly 1,000 Maine adults earned their high school credentials through Maine Adult Education.
