Austin Jahn "A. J." Green, born on September 27, 1999, is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). His journey to the NBA is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and the strong foundation he built during his time at Northern Iowa.

Early Life and High School Career

Green's basketball journey began at Holmes Junior High School, where he solidified his desire to play college basketball. He honed his skills at Cedar Falls High School, where he played on the basketball team and with the Iowa Barnstormers in AAU play. As a senior, Green averaged 26 points per game, becoming Cedar Falls' all-time leading scorer.

Recruitment and Commitment to Northern Iowa

Green was a consensus four-star recruit, ranked as the No. 78 player in the 2018 class by ESPN. On August 11, 2017, he committed to play college basketball for Northern Iowa, where his father was a member of the coaching staff.

College Career at Northern Iowa

A. J. Green played college basketball for Northern Iowa from 2018 to 2022, leaving an indelible mark on the program. His career was marked by impressive scoring performances, accolades, and a deep connection to the university and the Cedar Falls community.

Freshman Year Success

In his first season, Green earned Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year honors, signaling the start of a promising college career.

Sophomore Year and 1,000th Point

During his sophomore year, Green continued to showcase his offensive prowess, reaching the 1,000-point milestone in a win over Illinois State. He was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year.

Injury and Setback

On December 13, 2020, Panthers head coach Ben Jacobson announced that Green would undergo hip surgery, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

Return and Continued Success

Green returned to the court and continued to excel, earning his second Larry Bird Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year award in 2022. He also finished his final season with the Panthers with a program-best free throw percentage of 90.0%.

Legacy at UNI

Green's 1,769 points at UNI rank him fourth all-time in program history. He played 99 games for Northern Iowa, averaging 17.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. His achievements and contributions to the program led to his No. 4 jersey being retired on February 15. Green became the first Panther men’s basketball player to receive the honor.

Despite the honor, Green expressed his hope that future players would have the opportunity to wear the No. 4 jersey, stating, "I want people to still wear it. I hope somebody comes through here that does more than me and is better than me. That would be amazing to see. You know, Trey Campbell’s done a great job wearing it, and … it’s been exciting to see who’s next, and just how they represent it and wear it."

Green fondly remembers his time as a Panther, particularly UNI’s victory over Loyola during his last home game on senior night. He often wore his UNI team shoes while in the G-League and NBA Action, showcasing his Panther pride. He credits his time at UNI for instilling in him the importance of building the right habits and putting in the time. He also learned the ins and outs of basketball and how to play the game the right way.

NBA Career with the Milwaukee Bucks

Entering the NBA

Green declared for the NBA Draft and entered the portal in April 2022. He remained in the 2022 NBA Draft. He signed a two-way contract with the Milwaukee Bucks as an undrafted free agent in 2022.

First Northern Iowa Graduate in the NBA

Green made history as the first Northern Iowa graduate to make it to the NBA. “Being the first UNI Panther to play in the NBA means a lot,” said Green. “I also know that I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for all my coaches, former teammates and the city of Cedar Falls that had my back and supported me through all the ups and downs during my four years at UNI. I just hope that I was able to leave an impact on the program and can pave the way for somebody else to be the next to make it to the NBA from UNI.”

Professional Career

He spent his first professional season on a two-way contract with the Bucks and the Wisconsin Herd of the G League. Green appeared in 35 NBA games during his rookie season (2022-23) and ranked second among rookies in 3-point percentage (.419). In 2024-25 NBA season, Green made 73 appearances (seven starts) for Milwaukee, averaging 7.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.

Contract and Recognition

The Milwaukee Bucks re-signed A.J. Green. In October 2025, Green and the Bucks agreed to a 4-year, $45 million extension.

Despite playing alongside NBA superstars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Green remains focused on adding value to his team and learning from his teammates. He recognizes the differences between the NBA and college game. He said he has been able to find a role by staying ready and accepting a role as a floor spacer.

Personal Life

Green's father, Kyle Green, is currently an associate head basketball coach for Iowa State. He was previously an assistant coach and later associate head coach for Northern Iowa. Kyle played NCAA Division III basketball for Hamline University before playing professionally in Denmark. Green's mother, Michele, also played basketball for Hamline and is a chiropractor.
