Introduction
Ajman University, established on June 17, 1988, stands as a pioneering institution in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) as the first private university. Transformation to a Non-Profit Institution
In a significant move, Ajman University transitioned to a non-profit institution in 2024. This transformation, pursuant to an Emiri Decree by H.H. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, underscores the university's commitment to providing accessible, high-quality education. This decision, considered rare for the region, requires substantial support from donors and partners and aims to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder talented young individuals from pursuing their education. Currently, 65 percent of Ajman University's 8,000+ students receive financial aid.
Global Recognition and Rankings
Ajman University's dedication to excellence has been recognized through various rankings and accolades. The university has achieved a global ranking of 477th, marking a significant milestone. QS has ranked Ajman University #4 worldwide for the percentage of international students, with cohorts representing more than 80 nationalities. This inclusive spirit dates back to 1988, when Ajman University became the first private university in the GCC to accept expatriate students.
Research and Innovation
Research at Ajman University is geared towards real-world impact. One notable example is a collaborative study with Universiti Sains Malaysia and UAE health departments, which explored the effectiveness of pharmacists in the early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC). The study demonstrated that pharmacists could effectively encourage high-risk patients to purchase home-test kits, leading to the identification and treatment of 146 patients with undiagnosed CRC within just 10 months. These results provide a foundation for the integration of pharmacist-led screening programs into public health initiatives.
Ajman University is also deeply involved in global efforts to combat climate change. Sustainability is integrated into the curriculum, infrastructure, and daily operations. Key initiatives include the Mangrove Replanting Project, which engages students and local volunteers in restoring these vital ecosystems. With support from key partners, the university has successfully planted 3,370 young mangroves along Ajman’s shores.
Ajman University has once again affirmed its growing research impact, with 27 of its faculty members recognized in Stanford University’s prestigious World’s Top 2% Scientists list 2025, produced in collaboration with Elsevier. This represents an increase of ten researchers from last year’s list.
