Allama Iqbal Medical College: A Legacy of Medical Education and Service

Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) in Lahore, Pakistan, stands as a prominent institution dedicated to medical education, research, and patient care. Named after the national poet and philosopher, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the college has evolved into a leading center for medical learning and healthcare service since its establishment. This article delves into the history, development, and contributions of AIMC, highlighting its significance in Pakistan's medical landscape.

Inception and Early Years

The Government’s initiative in the mid-1970s to establish new seats of learning to spur medical education and research in Pakistan helped to materialize the aspirations of teachers to open new vistas for community-oriented medical education. AIMC was established on May 2, 1975, as Lahore Medical College. Professor Dr. Akhtar Hussain Awan was appointed as the first Principal, guiding the college as it started functioning at Birdwood Road. Dr. Muhammad Afzal Sheikh took on the role of the first Professor of Anatomy, while Professor Dr. Mahmood Ali Malik and the late Professor Dr. Abdul Ghaffar laid the groundwork for the Physiology Department. Dr. Sanaullah was the first Administrative Officer leading an able team comprising Mr. Mian Nazir Ahmed and Mr. Zeeshan Awan. On August 12, 1975, a batch of 313 students marked the beginning of what would become the institution's distinguished traditions.

Initially, the college was housed in a borrowed, inadequate building at the Post-Graduate Medical Institute on Birdwood Road, Lahore, with limited audio-visual teaching aids. The space constraints necessitated holding two shifts of teaching and practical classes to accommodate all students. Despite these initial challenges, the college progressed rapidly due to the dedication of students and staff.

Evolution and Development of the Complex

In 1980, the final plan for the Allama Iqbal Medical College Complex was approved, and the foundation stone was laid in March 1980. A significant turning point came in 1985 when Professor S.A.R. Gardezi assumed the role of Principal. He undertook the task of constructing the Allama Iqbal Medical Complex in an efficient manner. With a budget of Rs. 670 million, allocated for both the building and equipment, construction of the campus commenced.

The college complex was inaugurated on May 18, 1989, by the then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. This marked a new phase in the college's development, providing a dedicated campus for its academic and research activities.

Affiliation with Jinnah Hospital

The work on the 1100-bedded Jinnah Hospital started in 1988. Initially, Services Hospital was affiliated with AIMC, but later, as the College moved into its present campus in 1990, Jinnah Hospital was built as a dedicated teaching hospital. The Hospital started functioning in 1994, when the OPD was opened. Soon the department of Radiology, Radiotherapy and Pathology started working. Jinnah Hospital was officially inaugurated on Feb. Jinnah Hospital, named after the Father of the Nation, Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, reflects strengths like dedication, commitment, hard work, and selfless service. This health institution has been providing services to the very poor localities of the country.

In 2002, Jinnah Hospital was granted autonomous status, leading to a public-private partnership aimed at alleviating the suffering of the poor. Spread over 105 acres and with 1100 beds, Jinnah is the second largest teaching Hospital in the Punjab. According to Professor Sibit-ul-Hasnain, Principal of Allama Iqbal Medical College & Jinnah Hospital, it is the first autonomous hospital properly built according to a premeditated design with three main areas: a residential area for doctors and students, a rest area ("Sarai") for patient relatives, and the hospital itself.

Strategically located near the motorway, Jinnah Hospital serves as the official hospital for accident cases from the motorway and caters to patients from surrounding suburbs and southern regions of Lahore and Punjab.
