Alumni Gym: A Legacy of History, Athletics, and Community at Elon University
Alumni Gym, officially known as Alumni Memorial Gymnasium, stands as a significant landmark in the history of Elon University. Dedicated on January 14, 1950, it has served as a central hub for athletics, campus events, and community gatherings for nearly seven decades. This article explores the rich history of Alumni Gym, its evolution over the years, and its lasting impact on Elon University.
Origins and Construction: A Memorial to Fallen Alumni
The construction of Alumni Gym was conceived as a post-World War II memorial project, honoring Elon alumni who perished in the First and Second World Wars. Groundbreaking took place on March 1, 1949, marking the beginning of a community-driven effort to commemorate the war dead through a dedicated athletic facility. The Alumni Memorial Gymnasium was designed by Elon alumnus Louis M. Kearns Jr. '26 as part of a fundraising campaign to honor students and alumni who died in World Wars I and II.
The gymnasium's design reflected a straightforward, functional approach, emphasizing utility over ornamentation. It featured a basic rectangular layout with a wooden floor and exposed beam ceiling, typical of mid-20th-century collegiate architecture. A key memorial element was a bronze plaque listing the names of fallen Elon alumni from the world wars, installed in the entrance foyer to serve as a lasting tribute.
The construction of Alumni Gym was a collaborative effort involving various members of the Elon community. The Elon Alumni Association served as the general contractor, and students contributed to the labor effort, earning 75 cents per hour. Professor A.L. Hook’s physics students wired the building, showcasing the diverse skills and contributions of the university's community. The building was completed less than a year later at a total cost of $231,000, comprising $86,000 raised in donations and $145,000 borrowed by the university.
A Hub for Athletics and Campus Life
Alumni Gym officially opened to the public on January 14, 1950, with a ceremony attended by university officials, alumni, and local dignitaries. The dedication speech highlighted the facility's dual role as a venue for student life and a solemn memorial. It was formally dedicated on December 2, 1950, at halftime of Elon's basketball game against UNC-Chapel Hill.

Originally home to Elon's men's and women's basketball teams, as well as volleyball, the gymnasium hosted its first event-a men's basketball game against Catawba College attended by 2,250 spectators. It also served as the site for every university commencement from 1950 until 1987.
Beyond athletics, Alumni Gym played host to a variety of campus events, including addresses by notable speakers such as Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, Presidents Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush. It served as a versatile space for student gatherings, dances, concerts, and other activities, becoming a central hub for campus life.
George Troxler, university historian and former dean of cultural and special programs, noted that Alumni Gym was "very much at the center of things," serving as the site for every graduation from its opening until 1987.
Renovations and Upgrades: Adapting to Changing Needs
Over the years, Alumni Gym underwent several renovations and upgrades to adapt to the changing needs of the university and its athletic programs. The first major renovation occurred in 1992, with the installation of air conditioning, new flooring, additional seating, offices, classrooms, and renovated locker rooms.
In 2010, Alumni Gym underwent another significant renovation, which included the addition of stadium-style seating in a horseshoe shape around the court. The updates also included new scoreboards and video boards, along with new locker rooms and a new entrance at the south end of the facility. These improvements enhanced the fan experience and provided modern amenities for student-athletes.

A Transition to New Facilities
In recent years, Elon University has invested in new athletic facilities, including the Schar Center, a state-of-the-art arena that opened in 2018. Matt Matheny, the men’s basketball head coach, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach in Alumni Gym, stating, “Elon legends have played in Alumni Gym. I’m honored to be the coach and our team to be the team that got to be a part of the last season in this great storied facility.”

She added that while she was looking forward to creating new traditions in the Schar Center, the legacy of Alumni Gym would not be forgotten.
Repurposing Alumni Gym: A Focus on Wellness and Well-being
Following the transition of major athletic events to the Schar Center, Elon University has outlined plans to repurpose Alumni Gym as part of a broader wellness and well-being initiative. The facility, along with the adjacent Koury Center, is targeted for renovations to create an integrated hub supporting recreation, health promotion programs, counseling services, academic departments related to wellness, and social spaces.
University officials, including Larry Mellinger, then-director of Campus Recreation and Wellness, emphasized the vision of transforming the space to foster holistic student development, aligning with Elon's emphasis on comprehensive well-being. The proposed upgrades include potential enhancements for multipurpose functionality, such as modernized interiors for group activities and educational programming.
In the 2023 Campus Master Plan update, a remodel of the Koury Field House-encompassing the Alumni Gym area-is proposed to better accommodate sports like lacrosse and track and field, potentially including building additions or specialized training spaces. This reflects Elon's strategic growth vision, envisioning enhanced facilities to maintain a vibrant, student-centered campus amid rising participation in recreational and varsity programs.
