Alumni Quad at UAlbany: A Historical Overview and Modern Significance
The University at Albany's Alumni Quad, located on the north side of Western Avenue between O'Leary Boulevard and Ontario Street, has a rich history dating back to the 1930s. Originally serving as a residence hall for the teachers college that would later become UAlbany, it comprises five residence halls and once housed around 400 students. Students who have lived on Alumni Quad, particularly international and transfer students, often experience a different college lifestyle compared to those residing on the uptown campus. The approximately 3-mile distance between Alumni Quad and the uptown campus can make it challenging for students to engage fully in campus life.
For many new international students and transfer students placed on Alumni, the initial experience can be isolating. The commute to the uptown campus for classes, which can take between 20 to 45 minutes despite the 10-minute bus ride, often leads students to spend most of their time on the uptown campus for academic activities and then return to their rooms on Alumni.

Limited Resources
One of the main issues for students living on Alumni Quad is the lack of food options. Students have mentioned that there was only a small marketplace available to residents with limited options, which the students needed a meal plan in order to access. The options included microwavable food, such as Hot Pockets and frozen pizza. Students would have to go to the uptown campus to eat every day.
Renovation and Future Plans
Recognizing the need for improvement, UAlbany has explored options for renovating or replacing Waterbury Hall, one of the main buildings on Alumni Quad, with a potential investment of $38 million. The proposed plans include reformatting the residential units and creating a small campus center with a new dining hall and athletic facilities.
Stakeholder Engagement
The university has engaged the Boston-based architecture firm Elkus Manfredi to study options for Waterbury Hall. The study involves consulting with various stakeholders, including students and staff, to gather input and ensure that the renovation plans meet the needs of the university community.
Parking and Transportation
One of the key issues that has emerged during the planning process is parking. The university has been working with the consultancy Nelson\Nygaard on a parking/transit study of the area around the downtown campus. The university is also in talks with the city about ways to increase parking capacity near Alumni Quad.
Engineering College
As part of its efforts to revitalize the downtown campus, UAlbany plans to convert the Schuyler Building at Western and Lake into the home of its new engineering college. Exterior work on the building is scheduled to commence in March, and the university is seeking $20 million in state funding for the first phase of interior renovations.

Alumni Quad as Temporary Housing
In some instances, Alumni Quad has served as temporary housing when the uptown campus residence halls operated at over capacity. For example, during the Fall 2023 semester, Alumni Quad housed 225 students. All students who had been living on Alumni were relocated to the Uptown Campus by the start of the spring semester. The University hired a moving company to help any students who were moving to the Uptown Campus from Alumni Quad.
Student Organizations and Community Engagement
Despite the challenges of living on Alumni Quad, students have found ways to engage with the university community through student organizations and events.
Muslim Students Association (MSA)
The Muslim Students Association (MSA) is a student organization that promotes awareness of Islam on campus through events, programs, and social gatherings. The organization is open to all students, and it has created events for students to become involved. The MSA begins each semester with many social events for people to interact with each other such as game nights, movie nights and more. Also, the MSA has many informative programs that discuss various topics regarding Islam. Community service is a major importance for the MSA, which is why the organization is involved in many community service initiatives.
May Day
May Day is another event that helps students on Alumni quad interact with each other. May Day occurred on May 2nd, 2014 in the courtyard of Alumni Quad. Food was catered from the dining hall services, Sodexo. On the field of the courtyard, there were different activities for students to participate in, such as a water slide, and dunk tank. The basement of Sayles Hall was transformed into a casino setting with card games, roulette and dealers at each station. There was also a photo booth so students would take pictures with each other.
Resident Assistants
Resident Assistants (RAs) play a crucial role in building community among residents in their section. Along with working with residents, RAs have administrative responsibilities of being on duty, working with other student-staff members, going on rounds, and other various tasks. Every night there are three RAs on duty. The purpose of the duty phone is to only receive and make calls from and to the Director on Duty (DOD), the other RA’s on duty, and the Quad Information Center (QIC). RA’s have to go on rounds at least once when they are on duty, walking through all the floors, and buildings on Alumni Quad to make sure nothing wrong is happening, and to address any concerns that arise.

Noteworthy Incidents
Alumni Quad has also been the site of some unusual incidents, including reports of paranormal activity. According to Renee Mallett’s book Ghosts of NY’s Capital District, female ghosts covered in white walk aimlessly in Pierce Hall. Numerous witnesses have said they see the ghost lady, but no one knows why she hangs out in the halls or if she has a tragic backstory.
