Hands-on Experience at the Cannes Film Festival
One of the most appealing aspects of the American Pavilion is the chance to gain firsthand experience at an industry-only event like the Cannes Film Festival. Participants can complete a 4-hour per day internship with a company doing business at the Festival or with an AmPav operational team. Placements are selected based on individual goals and interests, ensuring a relevant and enriching experience.

AmPav offers several programs during the Cannes Film Festival, each with unique features:
Cannes Student Program
This program includes a 4-hour per day volunteer placement with a company doing business at the Festival or an AmPav operational team. It's designed for students seeking practical experience in the film industry.

Cannes Intensive (Week 2) Program

Application Requirements
To apply for the American Pavilion programs, applicants typically need to submit the following:

- An unofficial college (or high school) transcript. If you haven’t received grades from your current college, please include your high school transcript (or previous school transcript) along with a list of your current classes.

Eligibility and General Information
AmPav programs are open to a wide range of applicants:
- Non-Students: You do not need to be enrolled in college to apply.
- International Students: The American Pavilion welcomes international applicants.

School Credit
Many students have received internship credit for their participation in AmPav programs. It's advisable to check with your academic institution regarding credit opportunities.
Passport and Visa Requirements
While a current passport is not required to apply, accepted students must provide a copy of their passport before the program begins. Visa requirements vary based on nationality and the program's location:

- France & Italy: Americans and Canadians do not need a visa to travel to countries within the Schengen area (including France & Italy) for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Starting in late 2026, visa-exempt travelers will require a travel authorization (ETIAS). Non-US/Canadian citizens should contact their respective government organization for visa requirements.
- United Kingdom: Americans and Canadians require an electronic travel authorization (ETA) to visit the UK. Non-US/Canadian citizens should refer to gov.uk/check-uk-visa to see if they require a visa.
Program Fee Inclusions
Most program fees include festival accreditation, housing, breakfast, exclusive programming, and other benefits based on the specific program.
Refund and Attendance Policies

Application Reuse
Previous applications cannot be reused. A new application must be submitted for each program.
COVID-19 Safety Protocols
Adherence to all COVID-19 safety protocols will be required. Depending upon conditions at the time of travel, this could include proof of vaccination/boosters, masking, and/or frequent testing.
Program Differences
Cannes Intensive is a shorter, immersive program during the 2nd week of the Cannes Film Festival, whereas the Cannes Student Program involves a longer commitment with an internship component.
Filmmaking Experience and Language Skills
No film experience is necessary to apply for the Cannes Student Program, and you do not need to speak French to apply.
Internship Compensation
Internships are non-paying.

Finals Conflicts
Since the Cannes Film Festival always takes place in May, conflicts with final exams are common. It is recommended to discuss alternative arrangements with professors, such as taking exams early or late, writing a paper, or getting an “incomplete” and finishing pending projects upon return.
Emerging Filmmaker Showcase
Participation in The American Pavilion Worldwide Student Program is not required to submit a film to the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase. The Emerging Filmmaker Showcase is a separate program from the Cannes Short Film Corner.
Accommodations
AmPav does not provide accommodations but suggests securing accommodations within walking distance of the Cannes Film Festival.

The main form of transportation while in Venice is by boat, so you should be prepared with medicine if you suffer from motion sickness.

American Pavilion Annual General Education Scholarship
American Pavilion is devoted to supporting general education and offers an annual $1,000 scholarship.
Eligibility Requirements
- All students who are currently enrolled in an accredited college are eligible to apply.
- This scholarship is only available for US-Based applicants.
How to Apply
- Complete the application form.
- Submit a 1,000-word minimum essay that tells us about your goals in education as well as what your plans are after graduation.
- Explain why you feel you deserve this scholarship and how it would help you if you were selected as the winner.

AmPav also offers a scholarship opportunity through its "Lights, Cannes, Action!" Instagram Reel Contest. Participants create an Instagram reel that captures how the opportunity to attend the Cannes Film Festival could (or did) fuel their career, inspire their work, or open doors they’ve only imagined.
Contest Rules and Guidelines
- Must be 18+ by the start of the program.
- Travel to and from France and meals (besides breakfast) are not included.
- Winners must have a valid passport by the start of the program.
- Winners must submit an application/registration through Swoogo, as instructed by AmPav following the announcement of the winners, and go through the application process, but the application fee is waived and acceptance is guaranteed.
- Winners will choose their Cannes program in the application form (Cannes Student, AmPav Alumni, Cannes Intensive).
- Any 2026 Cannes Student Program fees, including the application fee, already paid by winners will be refunded OR the scholarship can be used for another AmPav Student Program (Austin, London, Venice).
- Winners can choose to participate in another AmPav Student Program instead of Cannes. The prize cannot be split between programs, and travel to and from the program location is not included.
