The American University Eagles men's basketball team, proudly representing American University in Washington, D.C., boasts a rich and storied history within the landscape of NCAA Division I competition. In 2008, they clinched their inaugural bid by triumphing over Colgate in the Patriot League tournament final. As a 15th seed, they faced a daunting challenge against #2 Tennessee. The year 2009 witnessed another remarkable feat as the Eagles secured their second consecutive Patriot League tournament title, defeating Holy Cross 73-57. This victory propelled them into the NCAA Division I tournament as a 14th seed, where they clashed with #3 Villanova. Under the guidance of Coach Mike Brennan in his first season, the second-seeded Eagles dominated the Patriot League Championship game, securing a decisive victory and holding the top-seeded Terriers to the lowest point total in the tournament's history. This triumph marked their first NCAA tournament appearance since their back-to-back titles in 2009. Beyond Division I, the Eagles have also made their presence felt in the NCAA Division II tournament, with three appearances, as well as two appearances in the NAIA tournament. Further solidifying their postseason experience, the Eagles have participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) three times and the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) once. Despite these appearances, American University has yet to win a game in the Division 1 NCAA Tournament. Its overall record in the Big Dance is 0-4, losing to Tennessee in 2008, Villanova in 2009, and Wisconsin in 2014, and Mount St.

Coaching Staff

Duane Simpkins was selected as the 18th head coach of American University Men’s Basketball on Saturday, April 1, 2023. Simpkins is the 18th head coach in the program’s history. Last year, the Eagles finished 16-16 overall. It’s his first experience as a head coach at the college level. Before American, he spent eight seasons on the staff at George Mason. He also had prior experience at UNC Greensboro and Towson. This year, Simpkins was named a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award by CollegeInsider.com, which recognizes coaches who exemplify success on the court while demonstrating outstanding character and integrity off of it.

In recent games, the American University Eagles have experienced a mix of successes and challenges. Chance Gladden's impressive 22 points propelled Boston University to a 68-65 victory over American in a regular-season finale. Hank Alvey's 24 points led Lehigh to a 78-73 triumph against American. Geoff Sprouse's outstanding 28 points fueled American's 75-61 victory over Lafayette.
