American Water Inclusion and Diversity Scholarship: Empowering Future Leaders

Scholarship Overview

The American Water Inclusion and Diversity Scholarship awards $10,000 scholarships to deserving students residing and/or attending college in states where American Water operates. The scholarship is designed to support students who represent lived experiences and backgrounds that are underrepresented in the utility industry and who value the advancement of inclusion and diversity in all aspects of society. The scholarship is administered by Scholarship America®, the nation’s largest designer and manager of scholarships and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations, and individuals.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the American Water Inclusion and Diversity Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Underrepresented Identity: Applicants must self-identify as one or more of the following:

    • A member of the LGBTQ+ community
    • Having a disability
    • An active member of the military services, a military spouse, or having a parent or guardian who is an active member
    • Female
    • Black, African or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Hispanic or Latino, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
  • Residency/Enrollment: Applicants must be high school seniors or graduates, or current college undergraduates, residing and/or attending college in one of the eligible states where American Water operates.

  • Field of Study: Applicants must be pursuing a certificate or degree in a non-medical STEM or business-related field at an accredited four-year college or university.

  • Commitment to Inclusion and Diversity: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a sincere commitment to inclusion and diversity in their lives, community, or education.

Scholarship Details

  • Award Amount: \$10,000
  • Renewability: The scholarship may be renewable for up to three (3) additional years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon maintaining a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and full-time enrollment in an eligible major.
  • Financial Need: Financial need will be considered as part of the selection process.
  • Selection Process: Scholarship America will select recipients.

Required Application Materials

Applicants must submit the following materials as part of their application:

  • Online Application Form: Complete the online application form.
  • Transcript: A current, complete transcript of grades. Grade reports are not accepted. NOTE: If you are providing SAT or ACT test scores, and those scores are not listed on your high school transcript, you will need to upload a copy of your test score report(s) separately.
  • Financial Information: Copy of the first two pages of the most recently filed IRS Form 1040 used for the Financial Information section of the application.
  • Recommendation Form: One online recommendation form must be submitted on the student's behalf no later than March 28, 2025.

Additional Opportunities: AWRA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Professional Development Scholarship

While focused on the American Water Inclusion and Diversity Scholarship, it's worth noting other opportunities that support diversity and inclusion in the water resources field. The American Water Resources Association (AWRA) offers a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Professional Development Scholarship. This scholarship provides a one-year association membership and complimentary conference registration to up to three scholarship winners from under-represented groups in the water resources field. Recipients are expected to participate in at least two of six specific activities during their membership year, such as presenting at a conference or bringing a non-member to an AWRA event.
