The American Welding Society (AWS), founded in 1919, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the science, technology, and application of welding, cutting, soldering, brazing, and thermal spraying. The AWS Foundation offers various scholarships to students pursuing welding-related education programs. These scholarships are available for students in welding programs, or programs with 50% or more welding coursework. National, District, and Section Scholarships for welding are for students in four-year, two-year, or certificate programs. The Welder Training Scholarship is for students in short-term certificate training programs.
In the past year, the AWS Foundation awarded over 1,600 welding scholarships totaling $2.7 million to welding students across North America.
Types of AWS Scholarships
The AWS Foundation offers a range of scholarships tailored to different educational paths and student needs. These scholarships fall into several categories:
- National Scholarships: These are the most prestigious and high-dollar scholarships offered by the AWS Foundation. Over 130 donor-funded scholarships, totaling more than $700,000, are available for students pursuing a bachelor’s or associate degree in welding or a related discipline. Scholarships range from $2,500-$10,000+. Each of the national scholarships are worth a minimum of $2,500 annually. - Residency and School Location: Applicants for District Scholarships must reside in and attend school within the boundaries of an AWS District, which includes the Continental United States and portions of Canada and Mexico. Applicants must reside within the boundaries of an AWS District.

For scholarships that do not require membership, selections committees typically prioritize applicants that are AWS Members. - Academic Program: Scholarships are available for students in welding programs, or programs with 50% or more welding coursework.
- Financial Need: There are some National Scholarships that require evidence of financial need, however most American Welding Society Scholarships do not. Some National Scholarships require demonstrated financial need, which means the cost of attendance exceeds the Student Aid Index (SAI) as found on the FAFSA Submission Summary. Financial Need is determined using the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from your FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR) compared to your cost of attendance.
- International Students: Students from other countries may apply if attending welding school in North America. Citizens. Application Process
The Online Scholarship Application includes several key components:

- Academic Profile: Information about your educational background, including the school you most recently attended, which may be your high school, trade school, college or university. Once the Contact Information, Academic Profile, and Personal Statement sections are complete, the application portal will display all scholarships you are eligible for. The Scholarship Application System will utilize your Academic Profile to assess your eligibility for all available scholarships.
