Once you realized that you had exhausted your options at LBS, start reaching out to LBS alumni at American Express in November and December to ask them more detailed questions about the application process, interviews, and the values central to American Express.

Attend the on-campus presentation at the very beginning of the year, take lots of notes (that you then used for your cover letter), and networked with the Amex employees who came, especially those from the teams you targeted. Be attentive to networking events on campus as this is a great way to meet alumni and foster connections.
