- Regular Decision: This is a non-binding option for students who want to consider multiple colleges before making a final decision. The Regular Decision deadline is January 5. Applicants will receive notice of the admission decision by late March.

However, students who choose to submit scores may do so, either self-reported or official scores. For official test score reporting, use Amherst's institutional codes: 3003 (SAT) and 1774 (ACT). Applicants who choose to submit standardized test scores at the admission stage may wish to consider submitting all test results, as we evaluate applications based on the most advantageous combination of scores (superscore) for either the SAT and/or ACT, regardless of test date.
- Early Decision Agreement (for ED applicants): This agreement is a binding commitment to enroll at Amherst if admitted through the Early Decision program.
- TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo Results (if needed for International Student Applicants): International students whose first language is not English may be required to submit English proficiency test scores. Applicants may submit either self-reported or officially reported test scores. Official score reports will be required only for those students who are subsequently admitted and decide to enroll at Amherst.

- Secondary School Transcript: The rigor of the courses you’ve taken, the quality of your grades and the consistency with which you’ve worked over four years give us the clearest indication of how well you will do at Amherst. While there is no specific set of secondary school classes required for admission, most successful applicants have pursued the strongest program of study available at their secondary school-typically including four years of study in English, math, science, social studies and foreign language-and have achieved the highest levels of academic performance.
- Teacher and Counselor Recommendations: These recommendations provide valuable insights into the applicant's character, work ethic, and contributions to the school community.
- Quality of Writing: The quality of writing as demonstrated in your essays, writing supplement, testing and recommendations.
- Extra- and Co-Curricular Involvements, Talents, and Leadership: Amherst seeks students who are engaged in their communities and demonstrate leadership potential.
- Standardized Test Results (optional / if submitted by student): While Amherst is test-optional, students who choose to submit scores may do so. Half the applicants admitted to Amherst College who submitted test scores have an SAT score between 1490 and 1580 or an ACT score between 33 and 35. However, one quarter of admitted applicants achieved scores above these ranges and one quarter scored below these ranges.
Additional Information for Prospective Students
- Arts Supplements: Students with talents or accomplishments in the arts may submit related material for review by Amherst faculty.

Approximately 20% of the Amherst student body is eligible to receive Pell Grants to assist with the Amherst College cost. Amherst College conferred a total of $70 million in Amherst College tuition assistance for the 2022-2023 school year. Of the total Amherst College enrollment, about 60% received some form of monetary aid to cover the Amherst College cost during the year 2025-26. All Amherst College tuition scholarships and work-study assistance are gifts rather than loans.
