This article delves into the intricacies of the AOII Foundation Scholarship, exploring its origins, eligibility criteria, application process, diverse scholarship types, and offering practical advice for prospective applicants.

The Genesis of the AOII Foundation Scholarship

The Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation was established to uphold the values and vision of the Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity. Founded in 1897 at Barnard College of Columbia University, AOII is rooted in principles of character, scholarship, and service. As the philanthropic arm of AOII, the Foundation channels resources into initiatives that enhance the well-being of its members and contribute to society. Among these initiatives, scholarships stand out as a vital component.

Overview of the AOII Foundation Scholarship Program

The AOII Foundation Scholarship program provides financial support to both collegiate and alumnae members pursuing undergraduate, graduate, or continuing education. These scholarships, while varying in amount and specific criteria, share a common goal: to promote academic excellence and reduce financial obstacles. Awards can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars, contingent upon donor funds and the applicant pool.

Graduate applicants must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours and be considered at least part-time students according to their college or university’s guidelines.

Navigating the Scholarship Application Process

The AOII Foundation Scholarship application process is designed to be accessible to all eligible members. Here's a breakdown of the key steps:

  1. Application Period: The scholarship application period typically runs from early December to mid-March each year. For example, applications are now open for the 2026-2027 academic year.
  2. Online Application: Applicants must complete an online application form, providing detailed information about their academic background, AOII involvement, leadership experiences, and community service activities.
  3. Transcripts: While an official transcript is preferred, an unofficial transcript can be uploaded during the application process.
  4. Recommendations: Two recommendations are required from individuals who know the applicant personally and can speak to their leadership, volunteer, and/or professional activities. It is suggested to ask an AOII Chapter Advisor or AOII alumna, current or former professor, college/university official, a current or former employer, or someone of the like. Once complete, the recommendation will automatically upload to your application account. As the applicant, it is your responsibility to ensure the recommendations are completed by the deadline. If your recommendations are not submitted by the deadline, your application is not considered complete.
  5. Review Process: Applications are reviewed by a scholarship committee.
  6. Recipient Notification: Recipients are typically announced in mid-to-late June, with funds distributed at the beginning of the fall term.
