From its initial construction to recent renovations, the stadium has evolved into a modern facility that fosters a competitive environment and enhances the overall atmosphere of Mountaineer baseball.
Construction and Development
The construction of Smith Stadium was a phased project, beginning in the fall of 2006 and culminating before the 2009 season.
Phase 1 (Spring 2007): The initial phase focused on establishing the essential elements of the playing field. This included the installation of the Beaver Field playing surface and the construction of team dugouts. Additionally, the Don and Pat Phillips Indoor Hitting and Pitching Facility was completed, providing players with a dedicated space for training and development, regardless of weather conditions. The Mountaineers were able to host 12 games at their new home that season, marking a significant milestone in the program's history. The first contest ever played at the facility was on April 10, 2007, resulting in a 6-1 victory over Gardner-Webb.
Phase 2 (Prior to the 2008 Campaign): The second phase centered on enhancing the fan experience and providing essential team amenities. Permanent seating areas and the Beaver Clubhouse were erected, offering comfortable and convenient spaces for spectators and players alike. The Mountaineers played their entire home slate at the ballpark, posting a 13-11 mark at home.
Phase 3 (Prior to the 2009 Season): The final phase focused on completing the stadium's infrastructure and ensuring a welcoming environment for all attendees. The stadium's entrance, concourse, and concessions/press box facility were completed, providing fans with easy access to amenities and enhancing the overall game-day experience.
