Apple Martin: Navigating College, Identity, and the Path Ahead
Apple Martin, the daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, has grown up in the public eye, but she is carving her own path as a college student. At 20 years old, she is a student at Vanderbilt University, where she is navigating the typical challenges and joys of college life while also exploring her interests and passions. This article delves into Apple's college experience, her evolving aspirations, and her perspective on identity and self-discovery.
Finding Her Place at Vanderbilt
Leaving Los Angeles for Nashville allowed Apple to live life on her own terms. She is grateful that she got to have a really normal experience. While she once dreamed of becoming a lawyer, she is now exploring her creative side, taking a cue from her mom.
Academic Pursuits
Apple is majoring in law, history, and society. While she is not a drama major, she wishes she would’ve taken a theater course before she leaves. She finds a fun balance between her very different extracurriculars and her major.
Extracurricular Activities
Apple is involved in her campus' cabaret theater group, the Vanderbilt Original Cast. She participated in a show, a musical parody of Love Island called Love on an Island. She was getting her cast's costumes ready for the show. She loves to do theater because she adores it so much. She’s been trying to get involved in student films.
Evolving Aspirations
Apple's career aspirations have shifted during her time in college. She initially thought she wanted to be a lawyer. She loved acting, but she was insecure and nervous, so she was like, “Oh my god, if I’m a lawyer, I can perform on the stage in a trial setting. It’s insane that I thought that. Also I cannot lie, I was like, ‘I’ll just be Elle Woods.’ It’s a lot harder than it looks. I don’t know how she managed to go to law school every day as fabulous as she did.”

However, her interests have evolved, and she now wants to act. She also likes to sing. She doesn’t want to be a singer. She likes musical theater, but getting onstage by yourself to sing is so terrifying.
Style and Fashion
Apple has a keen interest in fashion and style. She grew up adjacent to fashion. She is saving things because clothes come back around. She gives them a second life - sustainability, yes, but also story.
Influences
Apple looks up to her mom and has also long considered her mother her sartorial North Star. She raids her mom’s wardrobe from her 20s. Her absolute favorite stuff is her old Calvin Klein from the ’90s. She also admires Jane Birkin, David Bowie, and Cher in the ’70s.
Personal Style
Apple's style is evolving. Day to day, she’s wearing Doc Martens-her red Oxfords, jeans, a white t-shirt, and a jacket- but then she has her fun and fabulous stuff. She likes Jane Birkin, those little babydoll dresses. She’s also been really getting into the ’60s and ’70s. She wants fun eyeshadow and fun clothes. But she doesn’t really care if they come back. She loves a really light blue matte eyeshadow with fun ’60s- the little downturned eyeliner. She thinks that’s stunning.
Vintage Finds
Apple is finding vintage on Etsy. IRL vintage is fun, but the markups are real, so she goes when she’s ready to splurge.

Navigating Identity in the Public Eye
Growing up as the daughter of two famous parents, Apple has had to navigate the challenges of living in the public eye. The mere announcement of her name as a baby came with a rush of media attention. She grew up with that uneven balance of getting out of the airport with her mom and being bombarded with cameras, and then just being a normal kid.
Maintaining a Low Profile
Apple is private on social. She’s working on being comfortable sharing her authentic self. She was really discouraged from doing anything in the public eye. Also, she was like, “I don’t think we need another celebrity child in the world.” She just tries to do what feels right and block out anything regarding her in the news to the best of her ability. And she’s getting a lot better at being like, “Fuck it.” She’s not going to be scared.
Uneven Interest
There seems to be almost an uneven interest in her. After the Chanel show, she did. Then she quickly realized why everybody has always said, “Don’t do it.” Because even if you see a million positive things, there can be one thing that absolutely wrecks you.
College Life and Experiences
Apple's college experience seems to be a mix of typical student life and unique opportunities.
Daily Routine
Apple is an early riser - up at seven. She scrolls in bed for 30 minutes. Skin care, a little journaling, class, home for lunch, and another class. Her favorite part is late afternoon when her roommates trickle in and their neighbors pop over. Someone’s cooking, someone’s doing work on the couch, someone’s asking what they’re doing that night.

Dorm Decor
Freshman year was minimal out of necessity - storage-maximizing more than self-actualizing. Now she likes to build a room over time: a watercolor she made went up, a Scrabble score sheet from a great game with her dad, and little things that become a collage of memories.
Skincare Routine
Apple alternates between two cleansers (both Goop because … perks, and they’re great): the green cleanser and the Cloudberry exfoliator. Then a moisturizer she found at Whole Foods, sometimes eye cream, always sunscreen.
Cooking and Food
Apple cooks simple, quick things she loves. Vegetarian favorites? Everything. South Indian, North Indian - she can eat the menu. She loves dosas, dal, a good vegetable korma. She also makes phenomenal garlic bread.
College Advice
The best thing from both her parents was, “You won’t be in trouble. If you’re in danger or sad or just need a hug, call us.” That made her feel safe. Her dad warned her not to leave studying until the night before.
Current Projects and Future Plans
Apple is involved in several projects and has exciting plans for the future.
Theater
She’s directing a play at Vanderbilt and loves it more than anything. She would love to do theater because she adores it so much. She’s obviously never done film before, but she’s been trying to get involved in student films.
Film
She’s working on a short film with two of her close friends that’s getting real, which is wild and exciting. They’ve reached out to professional actors and gotten traction.
Music
She’s also doing some music things with friends in a campus band. She has a very low voice so whenever they’re doing harmonies it’ll be like, “Alright, it’s the boys and Apple.” She’s singing her absolute favorite song ever this semester, which she’s so excited about.
Personal Growth
Apple wants people to see who she actually is, not just versions of her through other people’s eyes. She wants to keep doing things that push her and keep working with her friends - their energy is everything. She’s manifesting … honestly, anything.
