Aristotle University of Thessaloniki: A Comprehensive Overview

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), often referred to as the University of Thessaloniki, stands as the largest university in Greece and southeastern Europe. Named after the renowned Greek philosopher Aristotle, whose birthplace, Stagira, lies a mere 55km to the east, AUTh has been a cornerstone of Greek higher education since its establishment. Historical Foundation and Evolution

The genesis of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki can be traced back to Eleftherios Venizelos, who recognized the need to reinforce Northern Greece following its liberation. However, it was the government of Alexandros Papanastasiou that officially founded the university in 1925, legislated under Law 3341/14-6-25. AUTh holds the distinction of being the first Greek university established outside of Athens.

Interestingly, initial plans envisioned Smyrna as the location for the second Greek university, with Thessaloniki as the site for the third. However, due to the Greco-Turkish War in Asia Minor, these plans were disrupted. The university was built on top of the remains of what had once been the Jewish cemetery in Thessaloniki, until the cemetery's destruction during the Nazi occupation.

Three Stages of Development

The university's development unfolded in three distinct stages:

First Stage (1926-1950): This initial phase focused on establishing core academic disciplines, including the Faculty of Philosophy, the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Law and Economics, the School of Theology, and the Medical School.

Second Stage (1951-1975): The Faculty of Engineering, also known as the Polytechnic Faculty, took center stage during this period. Initially, it functioned as an independent institute before being integrated into the university. The various schools within the Faculty of Engineering were founded in the following order: School of Civil Engineering (1955-56), School of Architecture (1956-57), School of Rural and Surveying Engineering (1962-63), School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (1972-73), School of Chemical Engineering (1972-73), School of Mathematics, Physics and Computational Sciences (1982-83) and School of Urban-Regional Planning and Development Engineering (2004).
Third Stage (1975-Present): This ongoing phase has witnessed the establishment of new schools and departments, along with the integration of previously independent institutes of higher education. Key developments include the establishment of the Faculty of Fine Arts and its constituent schools (Drama, Film Studies, Music Studies, Visual and Applied Arts), as well as the creation of the School of Journalism and Mass Media Studies and the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences as independent schools.

Today, the Aristotle University comprises 12 faculties, 36 schools, and numerous other units which make it the largest university in Greece and southeastern Europe in terms of number of staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students and the facilities offered.

Honoring Thessaloniki's Jewish Heritage

Recognizing Thessaloniki's rich Jewish history, AUTh, in collaboration with the Jewish community, planned the reopening of the Faculty of Jewish Studies in 2014. This initiative aimed to revive a faculty that had been abolished 80 years prior. A monument commemorating the old Jewish cemetery was unveiled on the university campus in 2014, serving as a poignant reminder of the city's heritage.

Undergraduate Studies

AUTh provides 41 Undergraduate study programmes that lead to 1st cycle degrees. The minimum duration of studies ranges from eight to ten semesters, with the Medical School requiring twelve semesters.

The university boasts a multitude of Postgraduate Study Programmes, including Inter-departmental, Inter-institutional, and collaborative programs with other universities in Greece and abroad. Language of Instruction

Courses at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are normally taught in Greek. However, there are courses in other languages too, especially at the Foreign Language Faculties, Faculty of Law (courses in English, French and German language), School of Journalism & Mass Communication, and School of Economics. In all the other cases, there are special arrangements for exchange students, such as assignment of essays in English with the use of English bibliography in small groups. Exchange students may take courses in the following fields: Law, Economic Sciences, Journalism and Mass Media (only in spring semester), English, French, German, Italian Language and Literature.

Campus Life and Student Services

The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki provides a vibrant campus environment with a range of student services and facilities.

Campus Overview

The main campus is located in the centre of the city of Thessaloniki, and covers an area of about 33.4 hectares. The facilities of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are located in the main campus and in the area of Thermi. Some educational and administrative facilities are located off campus for practical and operational reasons. A number of these facilities are located outside the city of Thessaloniki or even in other cities.

Student Accommodation

Undergraduate and postgraduate A.U.Th. students, as well as PhD candidates, who come from large and/or low-income families, are entitled to free accommodation in the Student Halls of Residence. Social and economic criteria are considered for the selection of the students eligible to be accommodated in the Students Halls of Residence. The A.U.Th. Aristotle University of Thessaloniki owns three branches of residence halls for AUTh students with a capacity of 1,740 students; they are administered by the National Youth Foundation. They include reading rooms, sport facilities, restaurants, café etc. Two branches are in the city centre, one in "40 Ekklisies" near the campus and one in the former "Egnatia" Hotel in Vardaris.

Library and Information Services

The Library and Information Centre of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is an independent university unit which consists of the Central Library and its branches (Specialised Academic Libraries and Departmental Libraries). The Library and Information Centre supports teaching and research activities carried out at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Aristotle University Library is nowadays the second largest library in Greece, after the National Library. The A.U.Th. The Central Library has a reading room for students and a reading room for university researchers and teaching personnel. Every department of the university has its own departmental library where students can find books, periodicals, and information concerning the specific subjects their department deals with.

IT Services

The IT Center of AUTH is responsible for all network and computing infrastructure, the electronic services of the university, as well as the support of university users. Its activities cover the planning, development, procurement, management, security and maintenance of these ICT resources.

Health and Well-being

All undergraduate and postgraduate students of Higher Education Institutions, including PhD candidates, are provided with health care services (hospital and medical services), pursuant to relevant provisions. The Student Health Care Service located in the University Student Club building and the AUTH Primary Health Care Centre located in the administration building.

Sports and Recreation

The University Gym of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki provides the students and personnel of the university with a wide range of sports programmes and activities. All programmes aim to improve the quality of life of the members of the academic community through sports, games and physical activity. The university gym is located on the eastern side of the university campus, next to the Student Club. Inside the university Sports Centre there is a football field, basketball and tennis courts, handball courts and many more facilities for dancing, weight lifting, ping pong and so on. The students participating in the sports programs of the centre can take part in the internal championships organized by the Sports Centre or in the inter-university national championships organized by the Sports Committee of the Higher Education in Greece.

Career Services

The Career Services Office (CSO) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki was established in 1997. Its main goal is to provide its services to students and graduates of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in order to facilitate their successful transition from the university to the work environment and help them search for a job which corresponds to their qualifications, skills and the experience they have gained, providing them with the necessary information about further education and job opportunities.

Additional University Facilities

University Student Club: The University Student Club is housed in a private building located on the eastern side of the campus and plays a very important role in student life. Inside the Student Club is a restaurant, a reading room, a medical service, a snack bar, and a hairdresser's shop. The Student Club is responsible for the catering and medical care of the students of A.U.Th. and University of Macedonia.
Aristotle University Seismological Station: The Aristotle University Seismological Station was founded in 1978 and is used since then for the detection and measurement of earthquakes that occur nationwide and worldwide.
University Farm: The University Farm covers an area of 1.9 square kilometres and is located in the south side of Thessaloniki near the city airport.
University Forest Reserves: The University Forest Reserves cover a total area of 88 square kilometres.
University Camp: The University Camp was initially founded in 1960. It is now located in Poseidi, Chalkidiki, in a very beautiful place by the sea, full of pine trees. It opens its gates every year during the summer period for the students and the staff of the A.U.Th.
School of Modern Greek Language: The School of Modern Greek Language functions under the supervision of the Department of Philosophy since 1970. It offers courses of Modern Greek Language and Greek Culture to foreign students who wish to learn the Greek language and/or intend to study in a Greek University.
Institute of Modern Greek Studies: The Institute of Modern Greek Studies was established in 1959 with the support of Manolis Triantafyllidis' bursary. Its main mission is the advance of science and the promotion of Greek education and philology.
Centre for Byzantine Research: The Centre for Byzantine Research was established in 1966 by a group of professors of AUTh. Its main aim is to study Byzantine history, law, art and culture, as well as the training of graduates and specialized researchers in Byzantine studies.
