Navigating Funding Options for Arizona State University Graduate Certificates
Pursuing a graduate certificate at Arizona State University (ASU) is an investment in your future. Understanding the available funding options is crucial to making this investment a reality. ASU provides various avenues to help students finance their graduate certificate programs, allowing them to concentrate on their studies rather than being overwhelmed by financial concerns.
Understanding the FAFSA and its Importance
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) serves as a gateway to various forms of financial aid for U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens. It determines eligibility for federal aid, including need-based aid like grants and loans.
Key benefits of filing the FAFSA:
- Access to Federal Aid: It's the only way to receive federal grants and loans, potentially covering a significant portion of tuition expenses.
- Eligibility for Additional Aid: The FAFSA determines eligibility for state grants and need-based scholarships, further reducing educational costs.
- Free and Accessible: Filing the FAFSA is free, and the streamlined process makes it quick and easy to complete.
The FAFSA opens in October before the academic year begins and closes on the last day of the academic year, requiring a new application for each academic year.
Internal ASU Funding Resources
Graduate College University Grant (GCUG)
The Graduate College University Grant (GCUG) is a need-based award designed to support new and continuing master's and doctoral students who demonstrate financial need, as determined by the FAFSA. It supports the recruitment and retention of outstanding graduate students. Students can potentially receive up to $5,000 per semester (fall and spring only) and may receive this grant for a maximum of four semesters.
GCUG Award Terms:
- Enrollment for a minimum of 6 credits in the awarded semester(s).
- Maintenance of a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- The award is only applicable for the period of nomination and is not automatically renewed.
Students must be nominated by their academic unit, with each unit allowed a limited number of nominations per program each cycle.

ASU Scholarships
ASU provides a search tool for scholarships. These scholarships are funds that you don't have to pay back.
Awards and Fellowships
In addition to the Awards and Fellowships offered by the Graduate College and your academic unit, you may want to consider some of the following options to support your studies.
External Funding Opportunities
Mastercard Foundation ASU Graduate Certificate Scholarships
The Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with Arizona State University, offers scholarships for professional certificates. A key expectation is that participants will apply their newly acquired skills and knowledge to contribute to their communities, thereby promoting social and economic development in their home countries. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review the application guidance and eligibility criteria before submitting their applications. Applications are open for the Mastercard Foundation ASU Graduate Certificate Scholarships 2026.

Employment Opportunities
Student Employment Programs
ASU offers three types of employment programs through the Student Employment Office: hourly, work-study, and stipend positions. Students can search for available jobs, both on- and off-campus, using their ASURITE ID at students.asu.edu/employment/search.
Agency and Community Service Organizations
A number of agencies and community service organizations work with ASU to provide tuition discounts and reimbursements based on the student’s commitment to provide volunteer or paid work within their fields in return. For example: MSW Stipend Program and Western Regional Graduate Program (WRGP).
On-Campus Employment Limitations
ASU recognizes that students may need to supplement their income with on-campus work in order to help pay for their studies. To ensure that a graduate student’s education and training are not compromised by commitments to additional employment, limitations are placed on the number of hours or FTE worked at ASU. They give you valuable professional experience within your field as well as financial support.
Loan Options
If grants, scholarships, savings, student jobs and family assistance do not cover the costs of attending college, you might consider loans. If other funding sources don't fully cover the cost of attendance, loans can be a viable option. The main ASU Student Financial Aid Office provides counseling services to help students navigate loan options.
Important Considerations Regarding Financial Aid
Taxes
Each fellow is personally responsible for individual taxes related to this award. Additional information regarding tax issues related to awards can be found at tax considerations. Specific questions should be directed to a tax advisor or contact the ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services.

Overawards
An "overaward" occurs when a student’s need based awards exceed his/her financial need, or the total of the awards exceeds the cost of attendance. If a student has been overawarded, federal regulations require ASU to adjust his/her awards which may result in a reduction in awards or a bill. Need based aid include grants, scholarships, Federal Work-Study, Federal Perkins Loans, and outside resources (i.e. faculty/staff tuition benefits, scholarships, stipends, etc.). Non-need based aid includes unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans, Federal Graduate PLUS Loans and Private Education Loans.
