The JJ Van Niel Era: A Transformation
The arrival of Head Coach JJ Van Niel marked a turning point for the ASU volleyball program. Hired in December 2022, Van Niel brought a vision for connecting with the local volleyball community and building a winning culture.
From 13-19 to Champions
In 2022, the Sun Devils finished with a 13-19 record. However, in Van Niel's first year, ASU went 28-17 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The following year, ASU achieved a remarkable 30-3 record, securing its first conference championship in team history in its inaugural year in the Big 12 Conference. Van Niel was also honored as the Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Record-Breaking Success
The 30 wins under Van Niel represented the most victories for an ASU volleyball team this century, and the .909 winning percentage was the best in team history.
Fan Engagement
The program's success on the court has translated to increased fan engagement. Average attendance has risen from under 2,000 in 2022 to over 3,000. Six of the top 10 most attended games in team history occurred in 2024.
Connecting with the Community
Van Niel prioritized connecting with the local volleyball community. He hired former Chandler Hamilton High School volleyball star Preslie Anderson as an assistant coach in January 2023, tasking her with increasing the program's social media presence and embedding it within the Valley volleyball scene.
ASU's coaches are a regular presence at club volleyball games and practices, fostering relationships with local talent. The coaching staff often references the mantra "Activate the Valley," emphasizing the importance of taking care of the local community.
Community Outreach
The program engages in various outreach efforts:

- Summer Camps: ASU volleyball holds camps for over 200 kids each summer.
- Camper Night: Kids who wear their camp T-shirts receive free tickets to a game and can interact with the players afterward.
- Academics and Outreach Committee: This committee organizes community service events, such as team dinners with residents at Mirabella at ASU, a retirement community on campus.
Looking Ahead: The 5,000 Fan Goal
As ASU prepares for the 2025 season, Van Niel has set a goal of averaging over 5,000 fans per game, a number that would be unprecedented in program history.
Other Spring Sports
While volleyball garners significant attention, ASU also boasts competitive programs in other spring sports.
Beach Volleyball
The Sun Devil Beach Volleyball team, known as the Sand Devils, started in 2014 and was part of the inaugural NCAA bean season in 2016. In 2019, the Sand Devils achieved a 21-win program record.
Unlike indoor volleyball, beach volleyball is played in pairs, requiring players to be versatile. Matches consist of best-of-three sets, with the first pair to 21 points winning a set.
Baseball and Softball
Sun Devil Baseball has a storied history, having produced over 100 Major League players and winning five national championships. They play at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. Sun Devil Softball, which started in 1971, has won four national titles and plays at Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium.
