The Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) plays a vital role in ensuring quality and integrity within biblical higher education. This article delves into the ABHE's mission, its accreditation processes, recognition, and its commitment to fostering flourishing institutions and leadership within the field.

The ABHE: An Overview

The Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), formerly known as The Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges (AABC), stands as an evangelical Christian organization encompassing bible colleges across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Founded in 1947 as the Accrediting Association of Bible Institutes and Bible Colleges, the organization's name was later shortened in 1957 to the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges. From 1973 to 1994, it was known as the American Association of Bible Colleges, before reverting to the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges in 1994.The ABHE is a member of the International Council for Evangelical Theological Education. While interdenominational, the ABHE mandates an annual affirmation of a common statement of beliefs.

The ABHE Commission on Accreditation serves and supports the interests of biblical higher education and the public by providing specialized institutional and programmatic accreditation for all levels of biblical higher education. The agency’s purpose is to assure quality and integrity among biblical higher education institutions through accreditation services empowered by peer review.

The ABHE is passionately committed to developing leaders for the biblical higher education movement. Thriving institutions are led by distinguished leaders who serve from the well-spring of a Christ-like character, who enjoy the fruit of professional competency and who exhibit the grace of expanding leadership capacity.

Recognition and Scope

The ABHE Commission on Accreditation holds recognition from both the Department of Education (DE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The agency is recognized by CHEA for all of the educational levels noted. Recognition by the U.S. Department of Education has been continuous since 1952, when the federal government first began recognizing accrediting agencies.

The U.S. Department of Education recognition (for Higher Education Act financial aid programs) includes the accreditation and pre‐accreditation (“Candidate Status”) of institutions of biblical higher education offering undergraduate certificates, associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, graduate certificates, and master’s degrees, including the accreditation of educational programs offered via distance education and direct assessment. The ABHE Commission on Accreditation Is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) as a national, faith-related accrediting agency. ABHE is one of only four recognized national, faith-related accrediting agencies, and was a charter member of the Council on Postsecondary Education (COPA) and the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation (CORPA), the predecessors to CHEA.
