Arizona State University (ASU) recognizes the immense value of international experiences in shaping well-rounded individuals. The ASU Global Education Office (GEO) is dedicated to providing diverse and enriching opportunities for students to study, intern, research, or serve abroad, seamlessly integrating global perspectives into their academic journey. Global education programs are for all ASU students, from all backgrounds and on any academic or career path. Study abroad is an integral part of the Arizona State University academic experience. No matter what your major is, study abroad is an incredible opportunity to travel, explore, and broaden your experience and perspectives while staying on track to meet your degree requirements.
Discovering the Right Program for You
The Global Education Office offers four distinct types of study abroad programs, each designed to cater to different academic goals and preferences: Global Intensive Experience, Exchange, Partnership, and Faculty-Directed.
- Global Intensive Experience (GIE): These programs provide short-term, focused experiences, often led by ASU faculty, allowing students to delve into specific topics or regions in an immersive manner.
- Exchange Programs: Immerse yourself in a new culture through direct enrollment at a partner university, experiencing education from a different perspective.
- Partnership Programs: Benefit from structured programs developed in collaboration with reputable international institutions, ensuring quality academics and support.
- Faculty-Directed Programs: Learn alongside ASU faculty in small groups, gaining unique insights and personalized guidance while exploring a specific location.

Planning Your Global Journey: A Step-by-Step Guide
Embarking on a global education program requires careful planning and preparation. The following steps will guide you through the process:
- Program Selection: Identify a few Global Education programs that align with your academic goals and personal interests. View the details about each program type and search for programs based on your interests.
- Academic Advising: Consult with your academic advisor to ensure that the program fits within your degree plan and to discuss how credits earned abroad will transfer. After you have a few Global Education programs picked out, check in with your academic advisor. Which of my remaining degree requirements could I complete abroad?
- International Coordinator Consultation: Connect with an International Coordinator at the GEO to address any program-specific questions and receive guidance on the application process. Once you know which program(s) you are interested in, our International Coordinators are available to assist you. Each International Coordinator specializes in different programs and regions.
- Online Application: Complete the online application for your chosen program by the specified deadline. Apply online After you have selected a program, apply online by the program application deadline by clicking ‘Apply Now’ on the program brochure page. CIEE Partnership
To ensure students get the highest quality academics and most culturally immersive experience possible, ASU has partnered with CIEE: Council on International Educational Exchange, the non-profit world leader in international education. Funding Your Global Experience
Pursuing a global experience is an investment in your future. Like any other type of investment, it requires careful planning and management. However, the personal, academic, and professional rewards that you will gain from this experience will last a lifetime.
The GEO provides resources and support to help students finance their global education programs. You can find a Cost Sheet for your program on the Cost Info tab of the Global Education Office webpage for your program. The Cost Sheet will highlight the costs that are billed to your student account as well as additional estimated costs that are not billed to your student account but that you might expect to spend while participating. Once you have reviewed the Cost Sheet for your program and are aware of the costs you might expect to spend on your program, you can begin to make a plan for financing your global education program. You can receive funding for your program through financial aid, scholarships and grants, and community-based fundraising efforts. Would you like help learning about your financing options? - Financial Aid: Explore how your existing financial aid package can be applied to your global education program. We encourage you to speak to a Financial Aid Counselor, who can help you figure out how your financial aid might be applied to your global education program. - Scholarships and Grants: Research and apply for scholarships specifically designed for study abroad programs. Use our Scholarships and Grants page to search for scholarships that may apply.
- Community-Based Fundraising: Consider launching fundraising initiatives to garner support from your community.
Global Network, Global Flex and Open Campus Block
Choose between three types of programs: Global Network, Global Flex and Open Campus Block.
Global Network gives you the opportunity to spend a semester abroad for the same cost as ASU tuition. No, really! Global Flex Need specific classes to complete your degree but still dreaming of studying abroad? Global Flex is the program for you! You'll take your ASU courses online while adding optional in-person courses or an international internship abroad.Learn More. If you are a current, degree-seeking student at Arizona State University (ASU), adding ASU online courses to your CIEE Study Abroad curriculum is not an enrollment option available to you. However, there are other pathways to take ASU courses online, in addition to in-person coursework, while studying abroad with CIEE.
