Understanding ASU Scholarship Requirements for Continued Eligibility

Maintaining a scholarship at Arizona State University (ASU) requires students to meet specific academic and enrollment criteria. This article provides a comprehensive overview of these requirements, renewal processes, and available support systems to help students remain eligible for their scholarships.

Initial Eligibility and Scholarship Awarding

ASU awards New American University merit scholarships to incoming freshmen who have demonstrated academic excellence. Scholarship consideration begins after a student has been admitted to ASU by submitting an application for undergraduate admission, official transcripts, test scores, and the application fee. The scholarship award amount is determined based on the official academic credentials at the time of admission. Students who receive scholarships are typically notified in early April and May. The First-Year Merit Scholarship Estimator can help prospective students determine if they qualify to become a New American University Scholar by entering their GPA, competencies, and ACT/SAT score.

General Scholarship Renewal Requirements

To maintain scholarship eligibility, students must adhere to several key requirements:

  • Full-time Enrollment: Students must be admitted and enrolled full-time in an ASU immersion graduate degree program (online degree programs not eligible) immediately following their undergraduate degree completion. There must be no gap in enrollment.
  • Continuous Enrollment: Students must remain continuously enrolled at ASU.
  • Good Standing: Students must remain in good standing with the University.
  • Minimum GPA: Maintain a minimum cumulative ASU GPA of 3.0.
  • Credit Hours: Maintain a 2.50 to 2.99 and complete a minimum of 24 credits or higher each academic year, you will remain in the Scholarship Maintenance Plan.
  • Thank You Letter: Provide a Thank You Letter to your scholarship donor.

Fulton Schools scholarships are not automatically renewable, and students must re-apply annually for consideration.

Scholarship Renewal at the Graduate Level

Students awarded a New American University scholarship at the National Scholar, President’s, Provost, or Dean’s award level may be eligible to renew their scholarship at the graduate level. To qualify, they must have terms of eligibility remaining on their 8-term award and enroll in an ASU immersion graduate program (online degree programs not eligible) as a full-time, degree-seeking student directly after completing their ASU undergraduate program. To renew the scholarship at the graduate level, students must maintain full-time enrollment (9+ credits per semester) and a minimum cumulative ASU GPA of 3.0. Award amounts will remain the same. The commitment begins during the fall 2016 semester. The student needs to apply and be admitted to an applicable ASU immersion graduate program, and enroll directly into the program upon completion of their ASU undergraduate program.

Scholarship Maintenance Plan

The Scholarship Maintenance Plan is implemented when students do not fully meet the standard renewal criteria. Students who do not meet renewal criteria by the end of the spring semester may complete ASU summer courses to increase ASU credit hours and/or ASU cumulative GPA. Only ASU summer courses are accepted to meet your prior year deficiency. Students who maintain a 2.50 to 2.99 and complete a minimum of 24 credits or higher each academic year, will remain in the Scholarship Maintenance Plan.

If a student meets the minimum scholarship criteria by the end of the spring semester after being on the Scholarship Maintenance Plan, their scholarship will automatically be restored to its original annual amount the following year. It is important to note that all other terms of the scholarship also apply.

Reduced Scholarship

If a student's scholarship is reduced for one academic year (fall and spring), their performance will be re-evaluated at the end of that year. If they meet the minimum scholarship criteria by the end of the spring semester, the scholarship will automatically be restored to its original annual amount the following year.

Appealing Scholarship Decisions

In very limited extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control, such as a serious medical emergency, appeals may be considered. The completed appeal must be submitted by August 1, and appeal decisions are final.

The Importance of Thank You Letters

Donors appreciate hearing how their generosity is helping students realize their personal and professional dreams. A thank you letter affirms the importance of their contribution and encourages their continued support for future students. ASU makes it easy to write these letters, providing a template when a student receives their scholarship award or as a download. Grammar and spelling should be checked and correct - remember this is an academic award. A letter for each scholarship received must be submitted, and students must write to each donor individually if they received multiple donor-funded scholarships. Scholarship notification will include specific instructions on how to send the thank you letter.
