Preparing for the Application Process

To have successful applications, you'll want to be intentional by tailoring your resume and preparing for potential virtual interviews:

  • Research the firm and office: By doing coffee chats or researching, understand the firm’s values and any recent projects or news. ☕Because insight programs are often initial touch points with the firm, you aren't expected to know everything! However, doing some research can help you stand out.
  • Prepare behavioral answers: Be ready to discuss your leadership experiences, teamwork, problem-solving skills, and any other traits that are important to the firm. You can use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for impactful answers.
  • Tailor your resume: Consulting firms love seeing quantified impact, and one popular resume format (first popularized by Google) is the X-Y-Z resume format.💻After focusing on results with the X-Y-Z format, check out these 6 tips to make final improvements!
  • The resume that you submit for the Bain Consulting Kickstart program is the most important component of the application process. Application reviewers will spend most of their time looking at your resume when making decisions on who to interview.
  • Although the Bain Consulting Kickstart program asks you to submit a Bain cover letter, it will most likely not be read.
  • You will need to submit some basic educational information, such as the name of the school you are attending and your intended major or degree.
  • The Bain Consulting Kickstart program requires you to submit an unofficial transcript to show the classes you have taken and your cumulative GPA. This does not need to be an official transcript that is directly sent from the school to Bain.
  • The Bain Consulting Kickstart program requires you to also submit your test scores for the SAT or ACT, depending on which exam you have taken. You will not need to submit an official score report.
  • Lastly, you will select up to three Bain offices that you have a preference for. However, note that the second and third choice offices you select will not have much of an impact on your application.

Skills and Qualities Bain Seeks

One of the cool things about consulting is that you don’t need to have any industry-specific knowledge or specialty skills to apply for the job - companies like Bain are looking to hire individuals who are problem solvers and can work around various roadblocks to get to a final solution.

Location Preferences

You should apply to an office that is located in a city that you’d be happy to live in - the office that you intern in will be the office that offers you a full-time role, if you receive an offer.

Salaries at Bain & Company

Bain increased salaries for 2023 start dates to keep pace with inflation and competitors across consulting, finance, and tech. As such, the entry-level base salary for an associate at the undergraduate/masters level is $112,000. For a new hire at the MBA/PhD entry level, the base salary rises to $192,000.

Final Thoughts

Exploring consulting insight programs is an incredible way to build awareness of consulting firms, sharpen your problem-solving skills, and build a strong foundation for long-term career growth. Many top firms offer these programs to connect you early on and accelerate your learning. A Bain internship is the most straightforward path to a full time offer, so put your best foot forward the first time!
