Baptist Health Internships: Investing in the Future of Healthcare Professionals
Baptist Health is committed to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals through comprehensive internship and externship programs. These programs provide students with invaluable hands-on experience, bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world clinical practice. By offering opportunities across various healthcare disciplines, Baptist Health invests in the future of healthcare, fostering a supportive environment where students can grow, learn, and lead.
Application Process for Student Rotations and Observations
For those interested in a student rotation or observation with Baptist Health Care, the initial step involves completing a short online form. It is important to consult the reference chart provided to identify the category that best aligns with your specific needs. After submitting the student application and receiving approval for a placement, detailed information regarding the requirements prior to commencing the rotation or observation on campus will be provided. These requirements are subject to variation based on the student's classification. A waiting period of 72 hours is recommended before inquiring about the status of the application. Certain internships may necessitate affiliation agreements with the applicant's school and program of study. Additional information can be found in the Student and Instructor Resource Guide.
Nursing Externship Program
The Nurse Extern Program is a six-week, paid summer opportunity designed for nursing students who have completed at least two semesters of nursing school, including medical-surgical clinical rotations. This immersive program offers:
- Three 12-hour shifts per week, totaling 216 practicum hours
- One-on-one mentorship from experienced Registered Nurses (RNs)
- Hands-on experience in essential patient care tasks such as ambulation, bathing, vital signs monitoring, and meal assistance
- Real-time application of classroom knowledge in a supportive and fast-paced environment
Externs are strategically placed in hospitals throughout the Baptist Health system, including locations in Little Rock, North Little Rock, Fort Smith, Conway, BHRI, Extended Care, and Drew County. This program is designed to facilitate a smoother transition from nursing school to licensed RN practice. As Sierra Cassidy, a former Nurse Extern, noted, "Being given the opportunity to work alongside an experienced nurse, ask all my questions, and especially get to practice my skills, all contributed to my growth and confidence as a nurse."
