Eligible fields include: Chemistry, Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering, Engineering, Geosciences, Life Sciences, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, and Psychology. Nomination

University nomination is required to apply for the Goldwater Scholarship; applicants cannot apply without it.
Academic institutions that have a Foundation identified Goldwater Campus Representative may nominate up to four currently or previously matriculated students annually. A student may not be nominated by more than one institution in a competition cycle.
UMBC can nominate up to 4 students each year, one transfer student, and one veteran.
We encourage transfer students and veterans to reach out to their campus representatives for guidance.

Campus Application Process

Because the university is required to nominate candidates for this opportunity, there is an internal application process.

Pre-Application: Fill out a brief pre-application in the Goldwater portal. Note: You will have access to the full application after your pre-application is approved.
Campus Deadline: Students seeking the University’s nomination will submit all application materials by the campus deadline. For example, the Campus Application Deadline might be November 17, 2025.
University Nomination: The University may nominate up to four current sophomores or juniors to the Barry M. Goldwater Foundation. After a review of applications, the university will contact all applicants to announce the campus nominee.
Letters of Recommendation: Ask for three letters of recommendation. These letters should be on letterhead and signed. Hyperlinks should not be included in the applicant’s essays or in the letters of recommendation.

National Application Process

Online Application: Once the pre-application is approved, applicants can begin using the online Goldwater application. Those students who have been endorsed for the Goldwater will submit their final application packet online.

- Question 1a (IF APPLICABLE): If you plan on attaining an M.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.O., D.O./Ph.D., D.V.M., or D.V.M./Ph.D., degree, explain why a medical (M.D., D.O.) or veterinary degree (D.VM.) is necessary for you to achieve your research goals.
- Question 1b (IF APPLICABLE): If your degree includes becoming a medical doctor (M.D., D.O., DVM, or DMD), briefly describe the steps you have taken to prepare yourself for a career involving medical care of humans or animals.
- Question 2: Describe an activity or experience that has been important in helping shape or reinforce your desire to pursue a research career in science, mathematics, or engineering.
- Question 3 (OPTIONAL): Describe any social and/or economic impacts you have encountered that influenced your education - either positively or negatively - and how you have dealt with them or incorporated them in your work to reach your career goals.
Research Essay: The research essay is a critical component of the application. Whether your essay is based on prior research or is a proposal, it is important that your essay clearly describes:
- Your intellectual contribution or expected contribution to the work.
- The skills you brought to the work from prior research or course experiences.

- The essay should discuss a significant issue or problem in the applicant's field of study that is of particular interest to her/him.

- Essays should be single spaced and use 12 point or larger Arial font and must not exceed 3 pages. The essay must include identifying information at the top of each page: a) Student’s Name & b) Name of student’s college or university. Single or double column format may be used.
Letters of Recommendation: Applicants should use recommenders who know them well and who can comment on their interest and aptitude for pursuing a research career. Individuals who have served as research mentors are excellent choices. Course instructors who can relate the applicant’s performance in the class to the applicant’s likelihood of successfully pursuing a research career are also great choices.
Transcripts: For the initial campus competition, applicants may submit unofficial transcripts. However, for the ensuing national competition, nominees will need to request official transcripts from the Yale University Registrar. An official transcript must also be requested from any other institution attended for post-secondary studies (to be sent directly to the Fellowships office). Only one official copy of each transcript is required.
National Deadline: The National Deadline for GU Nominees might be Friday, January 30, 2026, 6PM ET. Institution nominations must be submitted by January 30, 2026.
