Navigating GPA Requirements for Baruch College Admissions

Baruch College, a part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, attracts many students due to its strong academic reputation, especially in business-related fields. For prospective students, understanding the GPA requirements is crucial for a successful application. While Baruch College doesn't technically have a strict minimum GPA, aiming for a competitive GPA is essential.

Understanding the GPA Landscape at Baruch College

Baruch College is moderately selective. The acceptance rate at Baruch College is 51.2%. While there isn't a specific GPA cutoff, successful applicants typically have a strong academic record. The average high school GPA of the incoming freshman class at Baruch College falls around 3.7 on the 4.0 scale, indicating that primarily A- students are accepted and ultimately attend. This suggests that you'll need at least a mix of A's and B's, with more A's than B's to be competitive.

However, there's a lot of variation, and some students with either a lower or a higher GPA have been accepted in the past.

What GPA Do You Need to Get Into Baruch College?

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. The average GPA at Baruch College is 3.6. This requires you to be above average in your high school class. You'll need at least a mix of A's and B's, with a leaning toward A's.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. You can compensate for a lower GPA with harder classes, like AP or IB classes. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.6, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate.

Standardized Tests: SAT and ACT

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Baruch College hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores, it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Baruch College will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students.

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. The 25th percentile SAT score is 1210, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1390. Scoring at a 1320 SAT or above will already give you a great shot at getting in. The average ACT score at Baruch College is 27. The 25th percentile ACT score is 24, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 29.

To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 27 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. Baruch College considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration.

Because this school is moderately selective, strong academic performance will almost guarantee you admission. Scoring a 1390 SAT or a 29 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission. If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn't matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn't be too far off from the school average of 3.6. But you won't need dazzling extracurriculars and breathtaking letters of recommendation to get in.

Transfer Students

*Transfer students must have attended Baruch College for at least one semester with a minimum Baruch GPA of 3.5 to be considered. Grades from previous institutions will not be accepted. If this is your first semester at Baruch, you may apply to the Program with the understanding that your admission will be contingent upon your GPA at the end of your current semester.

Graduate School GPA Requirements

Academic RequirementsA student who is accepted for graduate work at Baruch College is required to maintain an average of B (3.0 GPA) in all graduate courses taken. While every effort is made to keep the students informed of their academic standing, it is the students’ responsibility to adhere to these regulations. Students who have completed the credits required for the degree with an average below 3.0 must have written permission from their dean to take any additional course work. Additional course work beyond 6 credits will not be permitted. Grades in preliminary courses that have been waived may never be used to improve the GPA. Grades received in required 8000-level courses are not included in the grade point average. These courses may not be used as elective credits. All 9000-level courses taken outside of the official program will be calculated into the GPA, although credits may not be counted toward fulfilling degree requirements. Grades in courses that duplicate prior course work will not be counted in the GPA.

Probation for graduate students

Students in the MA, MBA, MIA, MPA, MS, and MSEd programs are expected to adhere to the general policies governing academic probation. Students will be placed on academic probation at the end of the fall/spring/summer semester if their cumulative GPA falls below the minimum requirements indicated below:

Students on probation will be dismissed if their subsequent term grade point average, including Summer, is below the required 3.0. INC grades are not permitted. Students who are dismissed must file for reinstatement with the respective Committee on Academic Standings. If a student is dismissed and is out during the fall/spring semester, they must also file a reentry application with the Office of the Registrar. Students on probation should contact their program advisor to discuss academic progress and to plan for the student to return to good academic standing.

The following exceptions apply to students in the Executive programs in MBA, MPA, and MS:

EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM

Students are considered to be on probation if their grade point average falls below the acceptable level indicated:

Students will be dismissed if, after a maximum of two trimesters (18 credits) on probation, their academic performance remains below the acceptable level.

EXECUTIVE MPA; EXECUTIVE MS IN FINANCE; EXECUTIVE MS IN ANALYSIS OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, INTERNAL OPERATIONS, AND RISK ASSESSMENT; AND EXECUTIVE MSILR PROGRAMS

Students are considered to be on probation if their grade point average falls below the acceptable level indicated:

Students will be dismissed if, after a maximum of 12 credits on probation, their academic performance remains below the acceptable level.

EXECUTIVE MS IN INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY

Students in the Executive MS in Industrial/Organizational Psychology program are considered to be on probation if their grade point average falls below the acceptable level indicated:

Graduate Committees on Academic Standing

Each school has a committee on academic standing. These committees adjudicate students’ appeals in academic matters. Each committee is composed of faculty, students, and administrators. These are some of the appeals handled by the committee:

Request for W in a course or total resignation after the deadline
Request for reinstatement if dismissed
Curricular adjustments or waivers of academic rules
Change of grade that is initiated by the instructor

All requests should be documented with supporting evidence: medical notes, military papers, etc. Students do not appear before the committee. The filing of an appeal does not guarantee a favorable decision; the committee weighs all the information presented by the student and arrives at a conclusion based upon the application of College policies and the appropriateness of the request.
