Navigating Baylor University Freshman Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide
For incoming freshmen, financing a college education can be a significant concern. Baylor University offers a variety of scholarship opportunities to assist students in achieving their academic goals. This article provides a detailed overview of the scholarships available to freshmen at Baylor University, including merit-based scholarships, need-based financial aid, and academic scholarships.
Merit-Based Scholarships
Baylor University automatically considers all admitted students for merit-based scholarships. These scholarships are awarded based on a comprehensive review of the applicant's academic record and completed Baylor application, with test scores taken into account. No separate application is required for merit-based scholarships.
Eligibility Criteria
- Comprehensive academic record
- Full review of the completed Baylor application
- Test scores are considered
Applicants who submit a complete admission file after February 1 are considered for merit-based scholarships based on available funding. Merit-based scholarships are finalized upon admission.
Renewal Requirements
To renew a merit-based scholarship, students must maintain a cumulative Baylor GPA of 3.0 or higher and be enrolled full-time. If a student's GPA falls below 3.0 but remains at or above 2.0 after their first year, the scholarship may be continued on a probationary basis for the following year. However, if the GPA remains below 3.0 after the probationary period, the scholarship will be discontinued. Scholarships may be reinstated if the student's GPA returns to at least 3.0, contingent on available funding. Students can submit a Loss of Aid Appeal if they have not attained a Baylor CGPA of 3.0 and would like to request reinstatement of their scholarship.
Need-Based Financial Aid
In addition to merit-based scholarships, Baylor University offers need-based financial aid to students who demonstrate financial need. To be considered for the maximum amount of need-based financial aid, students must submit both the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) and the CSS Profile.

Considerations for Student-Athletes
In the state of Tennessee, Baylor is required to submit information to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) for any student receiving tuition assistance. Any financial award exceeding a family’s qualifying amount will render a student ineligible to compete in TSSAA Varsity athletic competitions. To become eligible, the TSSAA states that families can only receive up to their qualifying amount determined by Clarity. Student-athletes who accept more than their qualifying amount are eligible to compete in non-TSSAA sanctioned athletic competition.
