Belen Jesuit Community Mourns the Loss of Water Polo Athlete Lucas Osuna

The Belen Jesuit Preparatory School community is in mourning following the sudden and unexpected death of 15-year-old Lucas Osuna, a sophomore and water polo athlete. Osuna passed away on Friday during the Ransom Everglades Invitational, an annual regular-season tournament. The news has left students, teachers, and staff devastated, with many describing the campus atmosphere as somber and heartbroken.

Details Surrounding the Tragedy

Lucas Osuna was with his Belen Jesuit varsity team when he unexpectedly died. Parents and referees attempted to perform lifesaving measures on him, but were ultimately unsuccessful, according to the Miami Whitecaps Water Polo Club, where Osuna had played since sixth grade.

Community Response and Support

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, a longtime friend of Lucas’ father, Mike, has been acting as the family's spokesperson during this difficult time. Suarez shared condolences on Instagram, stating, "Lucas was the eldest son of my dear friend Mike, whom I’ve known for years through our time training together in Coconut Grove. My heart breaks for him and his family."

Suarez also emphasized the family's appreciation for the outpouring of support they have received. "Obviously, they're devastated by this tragedy, but at the same time, they are also overwhelmed by all the messages of support and donations that are coming in," Suarez said. "They're processing this entire tragedy."

During a prayer service held on Saturday at Belen Jesuit Prep School, many gathered to pay their respects. Students described the school day as “very quiet, definitely very somber,” according to senior Jose Ballesteros. Justin Otero, a fellow student, expressed the shock and grief felt by many: "You’re going to school with that kid one day and the next, he’s not here."

The Miami Whitecaps Water Polo Club shared a heartfelt message: “Lucas Osuna, you will forever be in our hearts. We are going to miss you."

Possible Medical Condition Under Investigation

While the exact cause of death has not been officially confirmed, preliminary indications suggest Osuna may have suffered a spontaneous rupture of the aorta potentially linked to an undiagnosed genetic condition, according to Mayor Suarez. The family is seeking further medical review to gain a better understanding of the circumstances surrounding his death.

Suarez relayed the family's hope that Lucas's death does not "discourage other children from participating in youth athletics. They emphasize that they were unaware of the underlying condition and continue to seek answers through further medical review."

A Life Remembered

Lucas Osuna, also known as "Thor," had been a student at Belen Jesuit since sixth grade. In a social media post, his family wrote, "It is with a heavy heart that we share the unfathomable loss of our beloved son, Lucas Michael Osuna AKA Thor. In true superhero fashion, he embodied perseverance, determination and overcoming all the obstacles life threw his way."

Belen Jesuit also acknowledged Osuna's death in a statement, describing him as "an outstanding student" and stating, "We are united as a faith community to mourn our brother Lucas Osuna '27 and support his family and one another."
