Exploring the Benefits of the Berkeley Alumni Association
The Cal Alumni Association (CAA) offers a multitude of benefits aimed at fostering connections with the University of California, Berkeley, and supporting its alumni and student communities. Everyone is welcome to join the Cal Alumni Association. Both annual and lifetime memberships are available to the general public. This article delves into the various advantages of becoming a CAA member, exploring both tangible perks and the intangible value of supporting a renowned institution.
Connecting with Cal: More Than Just a Magazine
Many alumni seek ways to maintain their connection with UC Berkeley after graduation. While some find their own paths, the CAA provides a structured avenue for staying involved. As a member, you’ll have access to discounts for arts and entertainment, food and dining, health and fitness, shopping, travel, recreation, and finance and insurance. Your membership dues support CAA’s vital programming for students and alumni.
Beyond the Screen Name: Access and Resources
While some alumni find alternative ways to connect, such as through YouTube and maintaining a "berkeley.edu" email, CAA membership offers tangible benefits that extend beyond online engagement.
One significant advantage is the access to UC Berkeley's extensive library system. CAA members can obtain a library card and check out books from all campus libraries (excluding the Berkeley Law Library). Members can check out up to 20 books at one time, and can use OskiCat to search the library catalogs, place materials on hold, and renew books online. This access can be invaluable for continued learning, research, or simply indulging in a love of reading.
Discounts and Services
Through our partners, CAA offers valuable and relevant discounts and services to all Cal alumni. We also provide benefits exclusive to CAA members. The association provides access to a range of discounts and services, including those related to arts and entertainment, dining, travel, and more. These savings can quickly offset the cost of membership, making it a worthwhile investment for those who frequently utilize these services.

Supporting Cal: A Mission-Driven Membership
Perhaps the most compelling reason to join the CAA is the opportunity to support UC Berkeley's mission. Your membership dues support our alumni and student communities in important ways. Through the help of our members, CAA provides undergraduate scholarships, student programs, and alumni events, publishes the award-winning California magazine, and much more. Your membership dues support CAA’s vital programming for students and alumni.
Investing in Future Generations
By becoming a member, individuals directly contribute to undergraduate scholarships and student programs, ensuring that future generations have access to the same transformative educational experiences. This support extends beyond financial aid, encompassing alumni events and the publication of the award-winning California magazine, which keeps alumni informed and connected to the university.
Weighing the Options: Is CAA Membership Right for You?
The decision to join the CAA is a personal one, dependent on individual needs and priorities. For those seeking to maintain a strong connection with UC Berkeley, access valuable resources, and support the university's mission, CAA membership offers a compelling package of benefits.
Lifetime Membership: A Lasting Legacy
A lifetime membership, while a significant investment, provides a lasting connection to Cal. As one alumnus noted, "It was cool because it lasts a lifetime. What else does that?" Beyond the tangible benefits, a lifetime membership represents a commitment to the university's future and a desire to remain part of the Cal community for years to come.
The Lair of the Golden Bear: A Unique Perk
One unique benefit that appeals to many alumni is the opportunity to register for the Lair of the Golden Bear, a popular family camp. For some, like the alumnus who camps at the Lair every summer, this single benefit justifies the cost of membership.

Navigating Membership: Practical Information
For those interested in becoming CAA members, here's some practical information.
Who Can Join?
Everyone is welcome to join the Cal Alumni Association. Our annual and life memberships are open to the general public. You don't have to be an alumnus to become a member and support the university.
Staying Informed
CAA members receive regular updates on the latest innovations, achievements, and events on campus. This ensures that members remain connected to the university's vibrant intellectual community.
Reciprocal Clubs
Members in good standing may contact us for a Letter of Introduction, to be presented to reciprocal clubs before visiting. The Association of College and University Clubs (ACUC) was the organization previously responsible for maintaining the official list of reciprocal clubs, however they disbanded over Covid. Most, if not all, former member clubs continue to offer reciprocity to our members. To be sure, members are encouraged to make arrangements beforehand when visiting another club. This benefit provides access to a network of clubs around the world, offering opportunities for networking and socializing.
Cal Alumni Association Credit Card
There is a Cal Alumni Association credit card. Using a CAA-branded credit card can be another way to show your support for the university, with a visual reminder of your connection to Cal.
