History and Evolution
In 1945, Lawrence Berk, a pianist, composer, arranger, and MIT graduate, founded Schillinger House, which was the precursor to Berklee School of Music. The school was initially located at 284 Newbury St. in Boston's Back Bay and specialized in the Schillinger System of harmony and composition developed by Joseph Schillinger.
At a time when most music schools focused on classical music, Schillinger House offered training in jazz and commercial music for radio, theater, television, and dancing. The school emphasized learning from practitioners and hired working musicians as faculty members.
In 1954, Schillinger House was renamed Berklee School of Music, honoring Lawrence Berk. In 1956, trumpeter Herb Pomeroy joined the faculty, followed by drummer Alan Dawson and saxophonist Charlie Mariano in 1957, and reed player John LaPorta in 1962.
