Exploring the Expansive Grounds of Berry College: A Comprehensive Guide
Berry College, nestled in the Mount Berry community near Rome, Georgia, boasts the title of the largest contiguous college campus in the world. This article delves into the various aspects of this unique institution, providing a comprehensive overview of its history, academic offerings, campus life, and distinctive features.
A Historical Overview
Founded in 1902 by Martha Berry, the institution began as the "Boys Industrial School" on 83 acres of land. Berry, the daughter of a prominent local business owner, envisioned a school where students would work to build, run, and maintain the institution in exchange for an education. This innovative approach helped keep construction and operating costs low, ensuring accessibility for students.
The school evolved over the years, becoming a junior college in 1926 and a senior college several years later, graduating its first class in 1932. A significant donation from Henry Ford during the 1930s enabled the campus to expand to 30,000 acres. Berry College gained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 1957, solidifying its academic standing.
Academic Programs and Opportunities
Berry College offers a range of undergraduate and graduate degrees, including Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, and Education Specialist degrees. These programs are housed within four schools, each contributing to the college's diverse academic program. The institution maintains an 11:1 student-faculty ratio, fostering a close-knit learning environment. A significant portion of classes, 58.9%, have fewer than 20 students, while 99.6% have fewer than 50 students. This commitment to small class sizes enables personalized attention and engagement. The average freshman retention rate, a key indicator of student satisfaction, stands at 83%, demonstrating the college's ability to meet the needs and expectations of its students.
Students can pursue a minor degree in 36 different courses of study across the four schools, allowing for interdisciplinary exploration and specialization. The Honors Program provides qualified students with an intellectually stimulating environment, offering Honors-only classes, Honorized classes, and study abroad opportunities. Honors students are required to complete and defend a senior thesis during their final year, fostering advanced research and critical thinking skills.

Berry College's commitment to experiential learning is exemplified by its student work program, called LifeWorks, which guarantees every student a job on campus. This program is rooted in the school's founding principle: Martha Berry's vision of providing education in exchange for work. The world’s largest campus - with distinct environments and ecosystems - supports unique work-based learning and research opportunities. Berry students work alongside faculty mentors - exploring their interests, gaining intrinsic knowledge around core areas of their academic studies and contributing in a way that better prepares them for their future. Known for a sense of purpose, work ethic and habits of mind, Berry graduates hold a distinct advantage in their professional lives. Hannah Blanton, recipient of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship, illustrates this wholeheartedly as she pursues a Ph.D.

Athletic Programs
The Berry athletic teams are called the Vikings. The institution is a member of the Division III level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) as a founding member since the 2012-13 academic year. The Vikings previously competed as an NCAA D-III Independent from 2010-11 to 2011-12; and in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC); formerly known as Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC) until after the 2003-04 school year) of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) from 2004-05 to 2009-10.
Berry has won three NAIA national championships in women's soccer (1987, 1990 and 1993), one national title in women's basketball (1976), one NAIA national crown in men's golf (1998), and three IHSA national championships in equestrian (2011, 2015, 2016). In addition, Berry student-athletes Michelle Abernathy (marathon, 1999), Caio Soares (3,000 meter race-walk, 2004), Michelle Tuggle (high jump, 1984) and Nicole Wildes (women's golf, 2004) have all won individual national championships.
The Berry College Board of Trustees voted to add football beginning in the fall of 2013, with a track and field athletic program to be added soon after. A new stadium, known as "Valhalla", has been built on Berry's campus. The Cage Center is Berry's 131,000-square-foot athletic facility that houses a performance gymnasium, a natatorium with observation seating, a fitness center, racquetball courts, an indoor track and classrooms.

Berry College in Popular Culture
Berry College has served as a filming location for several movies, including Remember the Titans and Sweet Home Alabama. Disney's Perfect Harmony (1991) was filmed almost entirely on campus at buildings such as Oak Hill, Frost Chapel, the Old Mill, and the Ford Buildings. A short scene from Dutch was filmed on the Berry campus. In addition, scenes for the Fox series, The Following, starring Kevin Bacon, were filmed here.
A Vision for the Future
The campus is at the fringe of one of the most rapidly sprawling urban areas in the world--the greater Atlanta metropolitan area. We are 70 miles from downtown Atlanta (and an equal distance from Chattanooga, Tennessee and Birmingham, Alabama), but our campus already looks like an island of green in aerial photographs. The College historically has used the natural resources on the land (timber, clay, limestone, etc.), and periodically has sold parcels for development. A century from now, provided good stewardship, this campus will stand out as an emerald refuge in the midst of urban sprawl and an industrial-belt desert. We are now bringing together a vision for our campus and our academic programs that will allow Berry College to realize the full potential of this truly unique resource. In addition to educational and research programs for Berry College faculty and students, the land resource is available to students and researchers from other institutions who wish to work with Berry faculty.
