As the 2025 college football season approaches, several teams boast defensive line units poised to wreak havoc on opposing offenses. Veteran college football writer Phil Steele has ranked the top 25 defensive line units in the country, providing a glimpse into the teams expected to dominate the line of scrimmage. Here's a breakdown of some of the top contenders, incorporating player rankings and performance metrics.
Clemson Tigers: A Force to Be Reckoned With
Clemson's defensive line is widely regarded as one of the best in the nation, potentially holding the top spot. While Phil Steele places them at No. 2, the Tigers possess exceptional talent and depth. The unit is spearheaded by two potential top-10 NFL Draft picks in defensive tackle Peter Woods and edge defender T.J. Parker.
Peter Woods is recognized as a top returning interior defender. Since 2023, Woods has led all returning Power Four defensive tackles in run-defense grade (89.7) and pass-rush win rate (14.9%). T.J. Parker, a top edge rusher, led all returning Power Four edge defenders with 12 sacks last season.
Clemson's defensive line depth extends beyond its star players. The Tigers added Purdue edge defender Will Heldt via the transfer portal. Heldt recorded 36 defensive stops last year, placing him fourth among Big Ten edge defenders. DeMonte Capehart and Stephiylan Green also return at defensive tackle, each earning PFF grades of 70.0 or higher in 2024. Dabo Swinney strategically utilized the transfer portal to further bolster the unit's strength.
Alabama Crimson Tide: Reloading with Talent
Despite losing key players, Alabama's defensive line remains a formidable force. Both edge defender LT Overton and defensive tackle Tim Keenan III opted to return for another season, solidifying the Crimson Tide's defensive front.

LT Overton enjoyed a breakout season after transferring from Texas A&M, establishing himself as one of the top 15 most valuable edge defenders in America, according to PFF's wins above average metric. He is currently ranked as a top edge rusher in college football. Tim Keenan III is also recognized as a top interior defender and stood out last season with a run-defense grade of 90.1, ranking him among the top Power Four defensive tackles.
The Crimson Tide also benefits from the return of several experienced players who logged significant snaps last year, including edge defenders Jah-Marien Latham and Qua Russaw, as well as interior defender James Smith. Tim Keenan III is expected to be a game-wrecker at nose tackle for Alabama's defensive line this season. LT Overton is considered a breakout candidate.
Texas Tech Red Raiders: Transformed Through the Transfer Portal
The Red Raiders significantly upgraded their defensive line through the transfer portal, bringing in a wealth of talent and experience. Lee Hunter, a top returning defensive tackle, joins Texas Tech after two dominant seasons at UCF. Across 2022 and 2023, he led all FBS interior defenders in run-defense stops (59) and tackles for loss or no gain (27). Hunter also recorded 49 pressures during that span, placing him among the top returning Power Four defensive tackles.
Romello Height, a transfer from Georgia Tech, is expected to man the other edge spot. Height recorded a PFF grade of 78.4 in 2024, ranking him among the top ACC edge rushers. Skyler Gill-Howard, a transfer from Northern Illinois, brings additional talent to the interior. He was a dominant player for the Huskies, ranking high among Group of Five interior defenders in PFF grade (83.8), pressures (29), and defensive stops (28).
Steele notes that the Red Raiders rebuilt their defensive line this offseason through the transfer portal, including Lee Hunter (UCF) and Skyler Gill-Howard (NIU).

Florida Gators: Potential First-Round Talent
The Gators boast two potential first-round picks on their defensive line in edge defender Tyreak Sapp and interior defender Caleb Banks. Tyreak Sapp is a highly-rated edge rusher and was among the nation's top performers, earning a PFF grade of 90.4 in 2024. Florida also sees the return of another starter in edge defender George Gumbs.
Tyreak Sapp returns to the defensive line in Gainesville, ranking in the top 10 per Steele. Caleb Banks provides additional strength to the unit, having recorded 4.5 sacks last season.
Penn State Nittany Lions: Elite Talent Up Front
While the Nittany Lions may lack the depth of other schools on this list, they feature two superstars in Zane Durant and Dani Dennis-Sutton. Zane Durant is among the top-ranked defensive tackles in the nation, leading all defensive tackles with 14 tackles for loss/no-gain last year. He also recorded 28 pressures, placing him among the top FBS interior defenders.
Dani Dennis-Sutton has the potential to be the third-straight Penn State edge defender to be drafted in the first round. Since 2023, he ranks high among returning Power Four edge rushers in pressures (75) and wins above average. Redshirt senior defensive tackle Alonzo Ford Jr. is also a player to watch.
The Nittany Lions have some elite talent on the defensive line going into 2025. Zane Durant is expected to be a disruptive defensive tackle for Penn State after registering 11 tackles for loss last year.

Michigan Wolverines: Reloading After Key Departures
Despite losing two defensive tackles who were top-15 picks in the draft, the Wolverines still possess a strong defensive line. Rayshaun Benny is recognized as a top interior defender. Derrick Moore is also a key contributor.
It’s very tough for a defensive line unit to replace Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant. Derrick Moore and TJ Guy will be responsible for the edge this year.
Other Notable Defensive Lines
Several other teams boast defensive lines capable of making a significant impact.
- Georgia Bulldogs: While the Bulldogs lost most of their defensive line production from last year, they return a star in defensive tackle Christen Miller. He is the only player who played at least 300 snaps for Georgia’s defensive line last season. The Bulldogs also have a number of former five-star recruits ready to step up, including Jordan Hall, Joseph Jonah-Ajonye, Elijah Griffin, and Isaiah Gibson.
- Miami Hurricanes: Rueben Bain Jr. leads the Hurricanes' defense. He is among the top-ranked edge defenders in the country and ranks high among returning Power Four edge defenders with 73 pressures since 2023. Ahmad Moten is also a key contributor on the interior. Sophomore Justin Scott is expected to be the other starter at defensive tackle.
- Oklahoma Sooners: The Sooners have plenty of experienced players on their defensive line, returning four contributors who played at least 300 snaps last year. Gracen Halton is a top interior defender. Damonic Williams also returns at interior defender. Marvin Jones Jr. is expected to be the other starting edge rusher.
- Texas Longhorns: The Longhorns bring back the nation’s best edge defender in Colin Simmons. Texas added former Purdue interior defender Cole Brevard in the transfer portal. Travis Shaw also transferred in from North Carolina. The Longhorns brought back senior edge defender Ethan Burke. Texas added a few five-star freshmen, as well, in defensive tackle Justus Terry and edge defender Lance Jackson. One of its starting edge defenders from 2024, Trey Moore, is back for another year but is expected to move to an off-ball linebacker role. Steele notes that Texas had to rebuild the defensive line unit ahead of this season. Colin Simmons logged nine sacks last year and Trey Moore had 9.5 tackles for loss.
- Oregon Ducks: The Ducks don’t have a defensive tackle or edge defender that made the top-10 list but still deserve recognition. Matayo Uiagalelei is a potential first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Oregon will miss first-round pick Derrick Harmon at defensive tackle, but it did add Bear Alexander from the transfer portal.
- Notre Dame: Notre Dame had a deep rotation last season en route to the national championship game. Be sure to watch out for Joshua Burnham, Bryce Young and Boubacar Traore to step up this fall.
- Iowa: Iowa consistently has one of the better defensive line units in the country year to year. The anchors of the unit include Aaron Graves, who had six sacks at DT last year, and Ethan Hurkett, who had 11 tackles for loss.
