A Legacy Forged in Competition: The History of Bethune-Cookman University Football

The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats football team represents Bethune-Cookman University in the sport of college football. The Wildcats compete in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Since 1979, they had been members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Starting with the fall 2021 season, they compete in the East Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). They play their home games at Daytona Stadium.

Early Years and Development

Since Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman first battled on the gridiron more than 95 years ago, the football program has grown significantly. From humble beginnings, the program has evolved into a point of pride for the university and its supporters.

The Florida Classic: A Defining Rivalry

The Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman football rivalry, known as the "Florida Classic," is one of the biggest events in HBCU football. The Florida Classic is more than just a game; it encompasses an entire weekend, with fans from both schools traveling in droves to support their schools. Since 1978, the Rattlers and Jaguars have met annually in the final regular season game for the Florida Classic.

Throughout the early years of the Florida Classic, the game was played all over the state of Florida. In 1978, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman decided that the two program’s annual matchup would be held at a neutral site. In the inaugural matchup, Bethune-Cookman jumped out to an early 17-0 halftime lead, but Florida A&M’s defense led a shut out second half, coming from behind to win 27-17.

The Florida Classic did not occur in 1983 and 1984 as neither school could agree on a playing site.

Memorable Moments in the Florida Classic

The 2000 Florida Classic was for all the marbles. In front of a huge 70,719 person crowd, Florida A&M took down Bethune-Cookman 31-28 in a thrilling matchup to win the title. In 2010, Bethune-Cookman entered the Florida Classic undefeated for just the second time since the rivalry moved to the final regular-season game. But prior performance gets thrown out the window when these rivals meet on the gridiron.

Conference Affiliations and Achievements

The move to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) in 2021 marked a new chapter for the Bethune-Cookman football program, offering fresh challenges and opportunities for growth. The Wildcats compete in the East Division of the SWAC, facing off against other historically Black colleges and universities. Prior to this, their long-standing membership in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) since 1979 saw them achieve numerous accolades and establish a strong legacy within the conference.

Home Field Advantage

Daytona Stadium serves as the home field for the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats football team, providing a venue for thrilling matchups and unforgettable moments. The stadium has been the site of numerous historic games and continues to be a focal point for the university's athletic community.

Beyond Football: A University of Champions

The success of Bethune-Cookman University extends beyond the football field, with notable achievements in other sports such as baseball and softball. For instance, the baseball team saw one of its players earn Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Pitcher of the Year accolades in 2006. The Wildcats under Melendez have made regional appearances in every year from 2000-2004 and 2006-2011. The softball team made a notable run to the Super Regionals of the 2005 NCAA Softball Tournament. The Wildcats finished with a 42-15 regular season record and though they were eliminated in the MEAC tournament, they advanced to the national tournament as an at-large team and became the first HBCU to earn a national at-large bid in any sport. B-CU then swept through the Gainesville Regional, winning three straight games and never trailing, to advance to the Super Regional.
