Early Childhood Programs

Big Lake Community Education recognizes the importance of early childhood development and offers an array of programs designed to support young learners and their families.

Early Childhood Screening

Early Childhood Screening begins at age 3. In Minnesota, all children must be screened before entering Kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening is required for children before public school kindergarten entrance (Minnesota Statute MS 121A.17). The state of MN recommends all children be screened as early as possible. Early Childhood Screening is a free snapshot of how your preschooler is growing developing and learning. Early Childhood Screening is held 5 times per year at Liberty Elementary. Screen at 3!!

Please note that screening is NOT a readiness test for kindergarten. It is a developmental snapshot of your child at the time of screening. Your appointment will include a quick and simple check in the areas of vision, hearing, speech, motor skills and thinking skills, as well general health and growth. Parents follow their child through the process and have the opportunity to discuss their child's development with the screeners.

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

Are you pregnant or have a child who hasn't started kindergarten yet? Are you looking for something fun to do with your child to wear off energy and talk with other adults? Discover. Create. Wonder. Ignite your child's natural curiosity through hands-on exploration in this playful ECFE STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) class designed especially for young learners and their caregivers.

  • Steamed Bao Buns: The word "Bao" is derived from the word "Baozi" which means, "to wrap" in Mandarin. During this fun-filled class participant will learn to create delicious Steamed Bao that will be used "to wrap" almost like a little jacket, the fantastic filling of Korean Bulgogi BBQ Chicken, and a wonderful variety of Asian inspired quick pickled veggies! What fun! Equipment Needs: A bamboo steamer is a "nice to have", but not necessary. While cooking-along is loads of fun and highly recommended, it is optional.
