Several institutions across the United States boast impressive land holdings. To create a comprehensive ranking, data from the Department of Education's College Scorecard was gathered, and the acreage for each campus was determined. To qualify for the list, the pieces of land making up the main campus didn’t have to be touching but they did have to be close enough to form a cohesive campus.

Berry College: A Closer Look at the Largest College Campus

Berry College, located in Mount Berry, Georgia, holds the title of the largest contiguous college campus in the world, spanning an impressive 27,000 acres. This vast expanse is nearly twice the land area of Manhattan. It also has something most schools can't claim: a mountain on its campus. Lavender Mountain, over 1,500 feet, features a diverse habitat of forest, fields and wetlands as well as hiking and biking trails. The campus is full of lush greenery and boasts English Gothic architecture, reflecting pools, fountains and the Old Mill - a large wooden waterwheel. The school has used natural resources on the land, including timber, clay and limestone, for development. Several feature films, including "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Remember the Titans" were filmed on campus.

History and Founding

Berry College was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry, the daughter of a local business owner, to educate children in the rural South who might not otherwise get an education. She enlisted the support of American celebrities of her time, including Henry and Clara Ford, Andrew Carnegie, Charles Dana and Thomas Edison. Originally known as the "Boys Industrial School," the institution began on 83 acres of land inherited from her father. The free labor provided by the students helped to keep construction and operating costs for the schools low. During the 1930s, the school campus grew to 30,000 acres, helped by a large donation from Henry Ford. In 1957, Berry College became accredited by the SACS.

Campus Features and Natural Landscape

The natural landscape is the reason why “Remember the Titans,” “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Dutch” were filmed here. The campus includes several beautiful chapels, the Gunby Equine College, a working farm, the WinShape Retreat Centre and the Roosevelt Cabin named for President Theodore Roosevelt who dined there in 1910. Travel + Leisure named it one of America’s Most Beautiful College Campuses and on the day we visited, we spotted a bald eagle in the tree canopy.

The campus boasts a wide range of biodiversity, including a major river, smaller streams, large and small ponds, wetlands, oak and pine forests, agricultural land, and an arboretum, supplying a rich array of natural habitats to support fieldwork and research. The campus is also home to the largest mill wheel (circa 1930) at 42 feet in diameter and still used to grind corn on special occasions. There are also 88 miles of trails, including the three-mile Viking Trail that’s popular with hikers and bikers.

Academic Programs and Student Life

Berry College offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration, Master of Education, and Education Specialist degrees from the four schools making up its academic program. The student-faculty ratio at Berry College is 11:1, and the school has 58.9% of its classes with fewer than 20 students, and 99.6% of its classes with fewer than 50 students. The average freshman retention rate, an indicator of student satisfaction, is 83%.

Berry's Honors Program is an undergraduate program designed to give qualified students a chance to learn in an intellectually challenging environment with their peers and professors. The Honors Program allows the students to take Honors-only classes, Honorized classes, and to study abroad in Honors-only programs. During their last year at Berry, Honors students must complete and defend a senior thesis.

The campus offers a unique student work program called LifeWorks, which guarantees every student a job on campus for those interested in participating. The work program is based upon the original idea the school was formed around. The founder, Martha Berry, would educate local children for free if they would work around campus.

Berry College has more than 80 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, and two disc golf courses; all are open to the Berry community and to the public. The Victory Lake Campground located in the heart of Berry's campus is available to Berry student use only.

A Christian-Based Education

Berry College's mission statement espouses "values based on Christian principles". The institution's board of trustees chose to shutter the middle and high school academy, and used that campus property to court leadership of Chick Fil-A, a Christian-run business, through its WinShape foundation programs. The campus has a chaplain, four chapels, and an active religion-in-life program supporting all Christian denominations and religions outside of Christianity.

Athletics

The Berry athletic teams are called the Vikings. The institution is a member of the Division III level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), primarily competing in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) as a founding member since the 2012-13 academic year. Berry has won three NAIA national championships in women's soccer (1987, 1990 and 1993), one national title in women's basketball (1976), one NAIA national crown in men's golf (1998), and three IHSA national championships in equestrian (2011, 2015, 2016).
