A Comprehensive Look at Hostel Life at BJ Medical College
BJ Medical College provides separate hostel facilities for male and female students, including a dedicated building for postgraduate students. For undergraduate students in the M.B.B.S. program, accommodation is divided into three blocks: A, B, and C. Blocks A and B are designated for male undergraduates, while Block C is for female undergraduates.
Block Allocation and Regional Dynamics
While the hospital administration allocates blocks randomly based on merit, a historical trend has seen Block A predominantly occupied by students from the Saurashtra region and the Varachha area of Surat, as well as those admitted through the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT). Block B, conversely, has traditionally housed students from North Gujarat and other areas of Surat. No such regional division exists for Block C.
This unofficial segregation has persisted for many years, leading to occasional disputes between the residents of Blocks A and B. The history between these blocks is fraught with rivalry, fueled by seniors who once instilled a sense of dominance over perceived rivals in their juniors. This environment fostered the emergence of low-profile leaders and, in the past, contributed to a culture of ragging.
Decline of Rivalry and Emphasis on Anti-Ragging Measures
Over time, the intense rivalry between Blocks A and B has diminished, with students showing less inclination to engage in conflict. This shift is partly due to administrative actions, including a strict prohibition on ragging. A committee has been established to monitor and address any instances of ragging. Students can now report such incidents to the dean, and the committee is empowered to take action against alleged perpetrators, providing a greater sense of security for students compared to the past.
To further reassure parents of incoming students, notices are prominently displayed, outlining the reporting channels for ragging-related complaints. While some instances of false complaints may occur, the overall effect has been a significant reduction in harmful activities. Although seniors may still conduct introductory sessions for juniors, these interactions are generally less severe than the ragging of the past.

Accommodation for First-Year Students
Previously, first-year M.B.B.S. students were housed in Block D. However, this block has been demolished for new construction, and first-year students are now temporarily accommodated in rooms in a nearby building. The conditions of these rooms are generally acceptable.
Mess Facilities
Food services in Blocks A and B are managed by different messes run by students. New students can become members through personal connections with seniors in a mess or, if vacancies exist, at the end of the year in the mess associated with their city of origin. However, access ultimately depends on the seniors who manage the mess.
Amenities and Services
Block A features a canteen run by Ravibhai, a long-serving individual from Karnataka. Ravibhai has developed a strong rapport with students, remembering them by name, city, and academic discipline. Each block also has an LED TV, purchased by students for recreational purposes. Water filters are available in each lobby, although their functionality is often inconsistent.
Parking space is adequate for two- and four-wheeled vehicles, though some students may need to park on the road outside the front gate. While there is space for a garden, it receives minimal maintenance. Each block also provides a small room for laundry services.
