Hamilton-Wentworth District School Boards: Shaping Education in Hamilton, Ontario
The city of Hamilton, Ontario, is served by two main school boards: the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) and the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB). These boards oversee the education of students from kindergarten through high school, each with its own distinct history, structure, and approach.
Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB)
The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) is the public school board serving the city of Hamilton. It was formed on January 1, 1998, through the amalgamation of the Hamilton and Wentworth County school boards. Before 1999, it was known as English-language Public District School Board No. 21.
Overview
The HWDSB oversees 103 schools, including 88 elementary and 15 secondary schools, and teaches approximately 50,000 students. In addition to standard programming, the board offers a variety of alternative programs focused on areas such as sports, academics, science, arts, and languages.
The HWDSB's vision is guided by a student-generated tagline: "Curiosity, Creativity, Possibility." This vision informs the board's pursuit of five priorities derived from public feedback.
Key Priorities and Programs
- English as a Second Language (ESL): The Elementary ESL Program helps students in grades 1 to 8 develop effective English communication skills, which are crucial for success in Canadian society.
- Safe Schools: Ensuring the safety and well-being of students is a top priority. The HWDSB believes that a safe environment is essential for effective learning. Safety measures are in place in schools, on school grounds, on buses, and at school events.
Governance
The HWDSB is governed by 11 trustees elected from wards across the City of Hamilton. These wards either match or combine municipal wards used for council elections. Trustees serve four-year terms and act as a link between communities and the school board, representing the interests of parents, students, taxpayers, and the school system. The Chair, Vice-Chair, and Honorary Treasurer of the Board are elected annually at the Inaugural meeting.

Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB)
The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) is the Catholic school board for the city of Hamilton, including the former Wentworth County.
Historical Context
The Hamilton Separate School Board (HSSB) was established in 1855. Over the next 114 years, seven other boards were formed in Wentworth County. In 1998, following the Ontario government's Fewer School Boards Act of 1997, the HWRCSSB became the English-language Separate District School Board No. 47. The board was renamed the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) in 1999. The French-language schools previously operated by the HWCDSB's francophone unit are now part of the French-language Separate District School Board No.
Governance
The HWCDSB consists of nine trustees elected from wards across the City of Hamilton. Similar to the HWDSB, these wards align with or combine municipal wards. Trustees are elected for a four-year term during municipal elections. The most recent election was held on October 22, 2018.
