A Guide to Boston College Dining Options

Boston College offers a diverse range of dining options to cater to the varied needs and preferences of its students, faculty, and staff. From traditional dining halls to specialty cafes and convenient grab-and-go locations, there's something for everyone on campus. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the dining landscape at Boston College, including meal plan options and a breakdown of the different dining locations.

Mandatory Residential Meal Plans

All first-year students and those living in residence halls without kitchens are required to enroll in the Mandatory Residential Meal Plan. Unlike other universities with a fixed number of meals per week, Boston College’s dining program is based on a declining balance system. This means you start the academic year with a starting balance on your BC ID, much like a debit card. You will only get charged for what you purchase. With a Declining Balance Meal Plan, you have the flexibility of eating what you want and when, with the option of taking food to go when needed. Students can choose from three different spending levels-Light, Base, and Premium-based on their dining habits. The meal plan selection deadline for the fall semester was August 30, 2025. Depending on the plan level, each plan includes Mandatory Residential Meal Plan money to be used at qualifying on-campus dining locations.

Base Mandatory Residential Meal Plan

All first-year students and those who live in residence halls without kitchens are automatically enrolled in the Base Mandatory Residential Meal Plan. This plan meets most students’ dining needs. At $3,372 per semester (approximately $33 per day, seven days a week), its funds can be spent at any of the nine qualifying on-campus dining locations. The Base Mandatory Residential Meal Plan also includes $300 per semester in Residential Dining Bucks, which provides added flexibility and variety. These funds can be used at specialty dining locations, through Grubhub mobile ordering, and at vending machines around campus. Mandatory Meal Plan funds roll over from first to second semester. Students can opt up to the Premium Plan or opt down to the Light Plan starting in mid-June. The meal plan selection deadline for the fall semester is August 30, 2025.

Premium Mandatory Residential Meal Plan

The Premium Mandatory Residential Meal Plan is designed for active students who dine on campus most of the time, including on weekends. Meal plan funds can be spent at any of the nine qualifying on-campus dining locations during the same academic year they are purchased in. Residential Dining Bucks can be used at all dining halls, specialty locations, vending machines, and for Grubhub mobile ordering. Students can opt up to the Premium Plan or opt down to the Light Plan starting in mid-June. The meal plan selection deadline for the fall semester is August 30, 2025.

Light Mandatory Residential Meal Plan

The Light Mandatory Residential Meal Plan is designed for students who tend to eat some meals off-campus or in their residence hall.

On-Campus Dining Locations

Boston College boasts a diverse array of dining locations, each offering a unique culinary experience. Here's a breakdown of some of the most popular spots:

Dining Halls

  • Carney Dining Room: Whether you're in the mood for a noodle bowl or a bowl of cereal, you'll find it at Carney Dining Room. This sunny third-floor dining hall offers plenty of space and selection, with an extensive menu of hot entrees and grab-and-go meals.
  • Lower Live (Corcoran Commons): Experience the vibrant atmosphere of Lower Live in Corcoran Commons, open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Offering something for everyone, you'll find customizable hot meals alongside convenient grab-and-go choices and a fresh, fully stocked salad bar. Lower is BC’s largest and, in my opinion, best dining hall. The best thing about Lower is its consistency. They have staples like chicken and two sides, pasta, pizza, a burger station, and a sandwich station available every day. While the food is good, Lower gets very busy during peak hours, leading to long lines, especially at the grill station.
  • Stuart Dining Hall: Located on the Newton Campus, Stuart Dining Hall is a home away from home for undergraduates and law school students, offering a full menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night as well as fresh-baked pastries and Peet’s Coffee. During breakfast and lunch, Stu is arguably BC’s best dining hall. Stu breakfast is great because it is mostly self-serve, so you can load up your plate with as many breakfast potatoes as you want. For lunch, Stu is famous on campus for its panini station, where you can get a custom panini with any toppings you want. Dinner, however, is another story. While it’s not necessarily bad, the options are extremely limited. Usually there are only two to three options each night, and they are inconsistent.
  • Welch Dining Room: Conveniently tucked into the basement of Lyons Hall, the remodeled Welch Dining Room offers plentiful grab-and-go items, including breakfast, sandwiches, soups, and beverages.

Cafes and Specialty Dining

  • Addie’s: Addie’s is your upstairs destination for customizable dinners, serving up burritos, nachos, tacos, and bowls Sunday through Thursday.
  • Café 129: Located inside 129 Lake Street on the third floor, Café 129 offers Mediterranean bowls, customizable sandwiches, rotating soups, and a salad bar.
  • Eagle's Nest: Tied for second place, Eagle’s Nest is, without a doubt, the best dining hall for lunch. Their pressers and sandwiches are delicious, and their customizable bowls are both tasty and healthy. Eagle’s also has acai bowls, soup, and other grab-and-go options. The only downside of Eagle’s is that it is only open for lunch, and they are closed on weekends.
  • The Rat: The Rat earns points for two main reasons: its produce and its playlists. During breakfast and lunch hours, it stands out with the best fresh fruit of any dining hall on campus. That said, the Rat doesn’t quite take the top spot because it’s only open for breakfast, lunch, and late-night, meaning you can’t rely on it for all your meals. Plus, their hot food options are limited.
  • Mac: Oh Mac, where do we even begin? First of all, Mac employees act like the food they put on your plate is coming out of their paychecks. But maybe the small portions aren’t a bad thing because Mac’s food is arguably the worst on campus. The food at Mac tastes greasy, not fresh, and I’ve heard one too many stories about people cutting into chicken and finding it raw.
  • Starbucks (Corcoran Commons): Conveniently situated in the front of Corcoran Commons, it serves as your go-to spot for all-day cravings. Start your morning with a Starbucks beverage, smoothie, and a delicious bagel sandwich, and return for satisfying lunch and dinner options like fresh pizza or macaroni & cheese.

The Bakery

Boston College Dining Services has always produced its baked goods through its very own in-house bakery. We produce a huge variety of desserts every day on campus. We provide the desserts for all of our on-campus catered events. The Bakery collaborated with the BC Baking Club and Boston Bakes to produce beautiful cupcakes to support the fight to end breast cancer.
