History and Evolution
Bouvé College's roots trace back to 1925 with the establishment of the Boston School of Physical Therapy and Physical Education, founded by Marjorie Bouvé. The school initially focused on physical education but later expanded to include physiotherapy courses. Over the years, Bouvé-Boston affiliated with Simmons College and Tufts College before eventually merging with Northeastern University in 1964.
In 1992, the Bouvé College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was formed through the merger of the Boston-Bouvé College of Human Development Professions and the College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions. This merger led to the elimination of some programs but also resulted in increased research support and the establishment of the Center for Drug Targeting and Analysis.
The $37 million Behrakis Health Science Center, opened in 2002, further enhanced Bouvé College's facilities and resources. This state-of-the-art building includes lecture halls, laboratories, simulation centers, and other amenities that support the college's mission of providing high-quality education and research opportunities.

These schools offer closely integrated courses in the physical, biological, behavioral, social, environmental, and health systems sciences. Students can pursue degrees in areas such as medicine, dentistry, public health, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, social work, and other related fields.
Bouvé College also offers an accelerated Bachelor/Graduate Degree Program, known as PlusOne, which allows students to earn up to 16 graduate-level credits that count toward both their bachelor's and master's degrees. This program accelerates the path to a master's degree and is available for programs such as the BS in Health Science & Master of Public Health Science (MPH), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) & MPH, and BS in Psychology & Master of Science (MS) in Applied Behavior Analysis.
For students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, the PreMed and PreHealth Advising program offers guidance and support.
Northeastern’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program offers guaranteed acceptance to NU undergraduate students who meet the established criteria. Students are also able to take advantage of the Double Husky Scholarship when enrolling in the DPT program, which offers a 25% tuition discount.
Experiential Learning and Research Opportunities
A hallmark of Bouvé College is its emphasis on experiential learning. Northeastern's signature cooperative education (co-op) program allows students to alternate semesters of study with work experience in their field of interest. This provides students with valuable hands-on experience and the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

Health Science students have the option to complete the program with or without a Co-op experience, however an experiential learning component is required for all Northeastern students. Our co-op positions allow students to learn and recognize the importance of professional behaviors both in the classroom and in the workplace. Popular options include clinical research, medical assistant, ophthalmic assistant, patient care associate and research assistant.
Bouvé College also offers a variety of research opportunities for students to get involved in the field, labs, and clinical settings. With nine research labs, including a robot and gait assisted rehab lab, neuro-physical therapy lab, and cancer survivor-ship center, students can participate in research ranging from studies at the cellular level to global systems that impact health across communities.
The Arnold S. Goldstein Simulation Laboratory provides students with immersive, hands-on experiential training across all disciplines.
During their senior year, students participate in a Capstone experience to broaden and integrate the knowledge, skills, and experience gained from the health science major. Students in our Health Science major learn the value of working as members of a healthcare team in the class setting as well as on co-op.
Campus Life and Global Experiences
Health Science students are actively involved on campus and in the community. All students can have a global experience, regardless of their major. There are many options for students, including Dialogue of Civilizations, a short-term summer program that is a unique and popular choice for Northeastern students.
