Understanding Bright Futures SAT Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship program offers several merit-based awards to Florida high school graduates who demonstrate high academic achievement. These scholarships provide financial assistance for students pursuing post-secondary education. Understanding the specific requirements, particularly the SAT scores, is crucial for students aiming to secure these scholarships. This article provides a detailed overview of the Bright Futures program, focusing on eligibility criteria, award amounts, and renewal requirements.

Bright Futures Scholarship Overview

The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship is a merit award predicated on high school academic achievement. The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) evaluates high school transcripts and test scores to determine eligibility for state scholarships and grants, including Bright Futures. Applying during the last year in high school, before graduation, is mandatory to maintain future eligibility for a Bright Futures Scholarship. To apply, students must submit a completed, error-free Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) during the final year in high school, between October 1 and August 31 after high school graduation. The application can be found at FloridaStudentFinancialAidSG.org under "Create a Student Account" for first-time applicants.

Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) Award

The Florida Academic Scholar (FAS) award is the most competitive and generous Bright Futures scholarship. Recipients may receive funding for up to five years from high school graduation, covering a maximum of 120 semester hours toward a first bachelor's degree. The award covers 100% of tuition and applicable fees.

Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) Award

The Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) award is less competitive than the FAS, but still maintains relatively high minimum test score and GPA requirements. Recipients will receive an award amount equal to 75% of tuition and applicable fall, spring, and summer fees.

General Requirements for Bright Futures Awards

Several general requirements apply to both Bright Futures awards:

  • FAFSA Submission: Students are not required to submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to receive initial and renewal Bright Futures eligibility.
  • Award Variations: Each award has different academic criteria for eligibility and provides a different award amount and/or number of semester hours.
  • Post-Secondary Institution Selection: To receive the Bright Futures Scholarship award, the post-secondary institution selection on the Initial Student Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) must be stated as the institution the student is planning to attend. For example, to attend the University of Central Florida (UCF), it must be selected on the FFAA. If another institution was initially selected, the institution name selection must be updated to reflect the correct institution.

SAT Requirements and Academic Criteria

Specific SAT score requirements vary between the FAS and FMS awards and may change yearly. Students should consult the official Bright Futures website or their high school guidance counselor for the most up-to-date information on the required scores and GPA.

Coverage of Graduate Courses

Graduate courses may only be covered by the Bright Futures scholarship (at the undergraduate tuition rate) if they are needed to complete a bachelor’s degree. In this case, the student must submit a memo from the department of their school or college to OneStop indicating that the graduate class that they registered for that semester is required to earn their bachelor's degree.

A Bright Futures recipient, who graduates with a bachelor’s degree in 7 or fewer semesters or in 105 semester hours or fewer, may receive funding for one semester of graduate study, not to exceed 15 credit hours, paid at the undergraduate rate.

Renewal Requirements

Renewal eligibility is an automatic process that occurs at the end of the spring term for students who received funding during the previous year. Renewal students must earn the required GPA and the required hours on all college coursework attempted, including transient enrollment hours.

Repayment Obligations

Students who withdraw from courses may be required to repay the scholarship funds. UCF has a repayment deadline, and the Florida Department of Education (OSFA) also has a repayment deadline. Students must pay UCF before the end of the spring term to be reported automatically.

A student with a verifiable illness or some other emergency beyond the student’s control may appeal the repayment requirement by completing the State Programs and Scholarships Appeal Form and submitting it with supporting documentation. Repayment for withdrawn courses appeals may be submitted after courses are withdrawn but must be submitted no later than April 30th.

If a student does not meet the renewal GPA and/or required hours due to a verifiable illness or other emergencies, they may file a State Programs and Scholarships Appeal Form. The medical or emergency circumstances that affected the semester/s in question must be documented.

Eligible students who need less than 6 credit hours to graduate must submit a letter (on official letterhead) from their student success coach. Graduate level hours may be approved by the student’s student success coach if the graduate level hours will count toward the undergraduate degree completion requirements; these students must also submit a letter (on official letterhead) from their student success coach.

Transient Enrollment

UCF will include approved transient enrollment hours in Bright Futures awards according to the per credit hour award amount for the type of institution attended. Grade and hours information will be reported for all students funded during the summer. If a student took transient hours, the grades and hours earned at the other institution must be reported to UCF by August 12 to be reported systematically. If a student has an opportunity to restore the Bright Futures award, the grades from the summer term may be used to meet restoration requirements.

Student Responsibilities

It is the student’s responsibility to know and meet the requirements of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program before high school graduation and throughout their college career. The class of 2026 can apply for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship beginning October 01, 2025.
