Classes first began in September 1964 at the St. Paul Street United Church in downtown St. Catharines. The Glenridge campus was officially opened on October 19, 1964, with Dr. James A. Gibson as the university's founding president. Richard L. Hearn was appointed as the university's inaugural chancellor in 1967. Arthur Schmon played a crucial role in establishing the university in the Niagara Peninsula and chaired the Brock University Founders' Committee.
