Celebrating Bronx Science: Alumni Reunions and Enduring Connections
Bronx High School of Science, an institution renowned for its rigorous academics and distinguished alumni, fosters a strong sense of community that extends far beyond graduation. This article explores the various ways Bronx Science alumni stay connected, from annual reunions and special events to supporting current students through college application guidance.
Reunions: A Time to Reconnect and Reminisce
Reunions serve as a cornerstone of the Bronx Science alumni experience, providing opportunities to reconnect with former classmates, reminisce about shared experiences, and celebrate the enduring bonds forged within the school's walls. These events, filled with food, drink, music, and camaraderie, offer a welcome escape and a chance to relive cherished memories.
Class of 1962, 1963, and 1964 Reunions: Notable examples include the 60th reunions of the Classes of 1962, 1963 and 1964. These milestone celebrations provide a unique opportunity to reflect on the passage of time and the impact of a Bronx Science education on their lives. The Class of 1963 celebrated on Saturday, June 3, 2023, while the Class of 1964 marked their 60th on Saturday, June 1, 2024. These events typically include dinner and festivities at locations like the Red Eye Grill in New York City.
Alumni Day: Alumni Day is an annual event that welcomes all Bronx Science alumni, along with their families and friends, to celebrate and reconnect with hundreds of alumni from different eras. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of the Bronx Science community.
Beyond Reunions: Staying Connected
Beyond the traditional reunion events, Bronx Science alumni maintain connections through various other activities and initiatives.

Cultural Events: The Class of 1962, for instance, organized cultural events as part of their Alumni Reunion Weekend, including a Broadway show ("SIX") and a New York Yankees game. These events add another layer of engagement and shared experiences for alumni.
Alumni Grill: Colleges and Universities consistently tell us that the most important aspect of the application process are the supplemental essays. Alumni are uniquely suited to help review supplements for their own alma mater. Alumni are invited to participate in events like the "Bronx Science alumni grill," where they can leverage their experience to assist current students with their college supplemental essays.
Updating Contact Information: Staying connected also means keeping contact information up-to-date. This ensures that alumni receive important updates about events, initiatives, and opportunities to engage with the Bronx Science community. Moved? Update Your Contact Information!
A Taste of the Bronx Science Experience: Halal Food Truck Debate
Even seemingly trivial aspects of the Bronx Science experience, like the debate over which halal food truck is the best, contribute to the shared identity and memories of alumni. The rivalry between Tony's Halal Truck and Jerome's Halal Cart, both located near the school, is a long-standing tradition among students.
Tony's Halal Truck: Located on Bedford Park Boulevard and Paul Avenue, Tony's has been serving the Bedford Park educational community for over a decade. Mohammed (Tony) Wasifi and Ahmad Mayan, Tony’s nephew, offer lamb, chicken, and combo over rice. Tony is known for his engaging personality and witty humor. “I want the customer to walk away from the truck not just with food, but with a packaged moment that lets them escape, relax and enjoy themselves,” said Tony. Tony’s chicken and lamb is served in a smaller, hyper-minced state and grilled and served over fine-grain rice with spicy or mild options. No vegetables are added, but there is a side salad consisting of lettuce. Both carts offer white, barbeque, hot, and honey mustard sauces. Tony’s also has green sauce, a tangy cilantro-lime blend.

Jerome's Halal Cart: Jerome’s halal cart, sometimes referred to as Sam’s halal cart, has been stationed on Bedford Park Boulevard and Jerome Avenue for the past eight years. Ali Gamil, the cart’s cook, and Hesham (Sam) Mustafa, the cart’s owner, serve customers. “We serve Italian sausages, which can be served on a bun or over rice. We also serve potato knishes,” said Sam about his lesser-known items. Sam’s combo over rice consists of larger chunks of meat. Sam’s chicken is always cooked in an aromatic orange sauce. “Everyone has different spices for their marinade, and my spice is a secret,” said Sam.
The debate, as one student writer put it, "depends on how you account for the factors of taste, distance, interaction, price, and variety." This seemingly simple question encapsulates the diverse perspectives and individual preferences that make up the Bronx Science student body.
The Orchid Show: A Touch of Art and Nature
While not directly related to alumni events, the New York Botanical Garden's Orchid Show, with its vibrant displays and artistic inspiration, provides another avenue for cultural enrichment and appreciation. The show, inspired by the bold architecture of Luis Barragán, features a blend of modern and traditional artists influenced by the vibrant energy of Mexico. Our Shop offers a wide selection of diverse orchid species and cultivars for you to find the perfect plant to buy for your home! Orchids come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns-making them a true favorite, whether you’re a horticulturist at NYBG or a houseplant enthusiast.
