Understanding Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Tuition Fees: A Comprehensive Guide
For prospective students and their families, understanding the costs associated with attending California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) is crucial. This article breaks down the various components of tuition fees, financial aid options, and other expenses to provide a comprehensive overview of the financial aspects of attending Cal Poly.
The Cost of Attendance: Sticker Price vs. Net Price
When evaluating college costs, it's important to distinguish between the sticker price and the net price. The sticker price refers to the published tuition and fees, while the net price is the amount a student actually pays after taking into account grants and scholarships.
Sticker Price Breakdown
Cal Poly's tuition varies depending on residency status:
- In-State Tuition: \$6,144 per year
- Out-of-State Tuition: \$13,596 per year
It's important to note that these figures represent tuition only. The total cost of attendance, also referred to as the sticker price, includes additional expenses such as:
- Books and Supplies: \$1,119 per year
- Personal Expenses: \$4,140 per year
- Transportation: \$1,410 per year
For in-state students, the total cost is \$33,450, while for out-of-state students, it is \$39,588.

Net Price: Factoring in Financial Aid
The net price provides a more accurate picture of what a student can expect to pay. This figure is calculated by subtracting grants and scholarships from the total cost of attendance. The average net price at Cal Poly is \$16,888 per year.
It's important to remember that the net price is specific to each student's circumstances and the college's financial aid policies. Cal Poly provides a Net Price Calculator to help families estimate their individual net price.
Financial Aid at Cal Poly
Financial aid can significantly reduce the cost of attending Cal Poly. Aid packages may include grants, loans, scholarships, and work-study jobs. The amount of aid a student receives is based on their financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Financial Aid Statistics
- Students Receiving Financial Aid: 35%
- Average Aid Package: \$18,400
- Freshmen With Need Who Received Financial Aid: 90%
Types of Financial Aid
- Need-Based Scholarships and Grants: These do not need to be paid back. The average award is \$15,611.
- Need-Based Loans: These must be paid back. The typical amount of loans a student must pay back is \$4,125.
- Federal Pell Grants: These grants are designed to help undergraduates and teaching credential candidates pay for their education. The Pell Grant amount is determined by a student's Student Aid Index (SAI), the cost of education, full-time or part-time enrollment, and terms of enrollment.
- Federal TEACH Grants: These grants are available to students who commit to four years of teaching in a high-need area (science, mathematics, special education, and, in California, agriculture) in a school serving low-income families. The grant converts to a federal unsubsidized loan if the teaching commitment is not met.
- Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG): This grant is designed to assist undergraduate students who have substantial financial need.
- Cal Grants: The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) awards entitlement and competitive Cal Grants to California residents or eligible students under AB 540.

Additional Fees and Expenses
Beyond tuition and fees, students should also budget for additional expenses such as housing, dining, books, and personal costs.
Housing and Dining
The actual cost of housing and food will vary depending on where you live and which dining plan you choose. First-year students are required to live on-campus and purchase a first-year dining plan. Transfer students may live on or off-campus and have the option to purchase a campus community dining plan. Some second-year students are required to live on-campus and have the option to purchase a campus community dining plan. Other continuing students may live on or off-campus and have the option to purchase a campus community dining plan. A typical one-bedroom apartment in San Luis Obispo costs about \$2,160/month. Many students living off-campus have roommates and rent multi-bedroom apartments to lower their housing costs.
Housing charges are typically posted for the entire academic year and separated into quarterly amounts. Housing charges are based on the number of nights the student is expected to be in their room during the quarter. Fall quarter is usually more expensive than winter quarter, which costs more than spring. Quarterly fee amounts are then broken into equal monthly payment due dates and amounts, with payments due the first of each month.
When dining plans are enrolled through the University Housing App (inside the Cal Poly portal), they are posted on the student's account for the entire academic year and separated into quarterly amounts. Dining charges are the same for each quarter. Quarterly fee amounts are then broken into equal monthly payment due dates and amounts, with payments due the first of each month.
Other Expenses
- Books, Supplies, Materials, and Equipment: Costs may vary depending on the courses you are taking each quarter.
- Transportation/Personal/Misc.: These estimated expenses are based on reasonable but modest costs, including transportation, clothing, recreation, and living expenses.
Non-Resident Tuition
In addition to in-state tuition and fees, non-California residents pay \$280 per unit in non-resident tuition.

International Student Fees
International students must also pay a \$300 per quarter International Student Fee and will be automatically enrolled in health insurance based upon enrollment. The fee for the health insurance premium will be charged to the student account. Health insurance premiums vary by term based upon coverage period.
Factors Influencing Tuition and Fees
Several factors can influence tuition and fees at Cal Poly:
- Residency Status: As mentioned earlier, in-state and out-of-state students pay different tuition rates.
- Program of Study: The cost to attend Cal Poly will vary depending on your program.
- Enrollment: Cal Poly charges Tuition-Registration each quarter, based on enrollment. All regularly enrolled students, both undergraduate and graduate, pay registration and tuition fees determined by the number of units per quarter.
- Living Arrangements: Whether you live on-campus or off-campus will affect your housing and dining costs.
The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Tuition and fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU reserves the right, even after initial payments are made, to increase or modify any listed tuition or fees. All listed fees, other than mandatory systemwide tuition, are subject to change without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular quarter has begun. All CSU-listed tuition and fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by the Board of Trustees, the chancellor, or the presidents, as appropriate. Any estimated costs on this page do not include books, other learning materials, or other costs of attendance not itemized herein.
Campus-Based Fees
Students are charged campus fees in addition to tuition and systemwide fees.
For the 2024-25 academic year, some students pay $6,077, according to the Cal State Committee on Finance. In March 2022, President Jeffrey Armstrong approved a gradual college-based fee increase through 2026-2027. Some students who started this fall pay $2,592 more in fees than they would have if they started three years ago. The fee cost is individual to each incoming class, and students pay the same fee amount for the entire time they are enrolled.
The entire college-based fees generated a $31 million budget during the 2023-2024 year, according to Cal Poly Administration and Finance. A presentation given to students in 2022 said 60% of the revenue generated from the fee was intended to fund financial aid and 40% would fund other academic areas, according to previous Mustang News coverage. The campus-based fee increase raised Cal Polyâs total in-state cost by nearly 20% for students enrolled after the 2025-26 school year.
Fee Adjustment Process
The law governing the California State University provides that specific campus fees defined as mandatory, such as a student association fee and a student body center fee, may be established. A student association fee must be established upon a favorable vote of two-thirds of the students voting in an election held for this purpose (Education Code, Section 89300). The university president may adjust the student association fee only after the fee adjustment has been approved by a majority of students voting in a referendum established for that purpose. The required fee shall be subject to referendum at any time upon the presentation of a petition to the university president containing the signatures of 10 percent of the regularly enrolled students at the university. A student body center fee must be established upon a favorable vote of two-thirds of the students voting in an election held for this purpose (Education Code Section 89304). A student success fee may be established or adjusted only after the university undertakes a rigorous consultation process and a fee referendum is held with a simple majority favorable vote (Education Code, Section 89712).
Financial Hardship and Support Programs
Cal Poly recognizes that affording college can be a challenge, and offers support programs to assist students facing financial hardship.
CalFresh eligibility requirements started to include undergraduate students with the passage of legislation in 2021. The Education Opportunity Program (EOP) at Cal Poly provides support to students from underfunded schools.
Payment Options
Visa, Master Card, Discover Card, and American Express may be used for payment of registration and tuition fees, nonresident tuition fees, housing, dining plans, and certain other University fees using the web credit card system. The University also accepts electronic check payments, known as eCheck or ACH, using the web on-line payment systems.
Fee Waivers
Cal Poly offers fee waivers to eligible students, including:

- A California resident who has been exonerated, as that term is defined in Section 3007.05 of the Penal Code; completes and submits the FAFSA; and meets the financial need requirements established for Cal Grant A awards.
- A student who is a member of the Armed Forces of the United States stationed in this state is entitled to resident classification only for the purpose of determining the amount of tuition and fees.
Scholarships
Cal Poly offers a variety of scholarships designed to assist students financially. Criteria include financial need, scholastic achievement, participation in school activities, community service, honors and organizational affiliations, and educational objectives. Incoming students are automatically considered for scholarships. Scholarships are normally awarded during the spring and summer for the following academic year.
Refund Policy
Regulations governing the refund of tuition and mandatory fees, including nonresident tuition, for students enrolling at the California State University (CSU) are included in Section 41802 of Title 5, California Code of Regulations. To receive a full refund of tuition and mandatory fees, including nonresident tuition, less an administrative charge established by the university, a student must cancel registration or drop all courses prior to the first day of instruction for the term.
